E3 2016: All the News from Ubisoft’s Press Conference

Watch Dogs 2

Ubisoft are never ones to do things half-heartedly and this is very true of their long, open world focused show. It kicked off with Just Dance 2017. The game is back unsurprisingly, revealed with plenty of fanfare and oddly dressed dancers, but it was announced for Nintendo’s NX, the first 3rd party game for the console. Is the Wii remote going to be supported on the new console? Or will we get a camera somewhere on that new system?

We then, in complete juxtaposition, got Ghost Recon Wildlands, in a very scripted gameplay demo with clear Metal Gear vibes we saw a target extraction mission with 4 players. Starting off stealthy, moving into a car chase and ending with a helicopter extraction. Moving forward I want to see how the game will work with just one player (I have no friends), will the AI be able to keep up with what I’m doing and assist or will I just have to lone wolf it like Snake?

Next up Trey Parker and Matt Stone came out on the Ubisoft stage to talk about the sequel they didn’t want to make. In South Park: The Fractured But Whole, the kids are now playing superheroes and they are in their own Civil War. A brief bit of gameplay showed you, the new kid, in Cartman’s basement choosing your superhero abilities. They’ve updated the combat, showing you can move around your enemies, pushing them away from you as you fight and your farts can now rip through time allowing you to change the turn order. The main trailer showed the boys talking about how they plan to start their own superhero franchise, making fun of Marvel and DC alike. It comes out 6th December, with pre-orders getting you the first game for free.

The Division got a little update, talking very briefly about the previously announced Underground DLC and new outfits in honour of Rainbow Six and Splinter Cell being added.

VR was a big feature for Ubisoft with Star Trek: Bridge Crew and Eagle Flight. In the first you help with the running the U.S.S. Aegis along with 3 other players. Ubisoft got several old and current Star Trek actors in to test the game in some pre-shot footage. Eagle Flight, shown off on stage, is a PVP game in which two teams compete in various game modes from the perspective of the bird of prey, which is available later this year on Oculus and other VR devices.

For Honor, the Ryse-like melee action game, got a lot more footage from last year’s reveal and now has a release date of 14th February. It looks brutal, set in a strange time in which Knight, Vikings and Samurai are all at war. The campaign gameplay showed the Vikings storming a Samurai fort situated on the coast, fighting Japanese warriors and climbing walls. The story revolves around ensuring your chosen army survives against the dark warlord Apollyon.

Grow Up, the follow up to last year’s Grow Home, got a nice announcement trailer and is slated for release in August.

Something you don’t have to wait for is Trials of the Blood Dragon, a mash-up of Trials Fusion and the now adaptable Blood Dragon (of Far Cry 3 fame). It’s out right now and looks crazy, but what more would you expect ?. If Ubisoft is doing these combo games, I want to see an Assassin’s Creed version!

Watch Dogs 2 got plenty more footage after the reveal last week – it probably won most swearing from a video game trailer and seems to encapsulate everything fun about San Francisco and everything missing from the first one. They have most certainly listened to the fans on this one. Ubisoft also gave PS4 owners some incentive, with DLC coming 30 days before any other platforms.

Lastly, Ubisoft gave us something brand new, which hadn’t leaked early! Steep, the new open world snow filled traversal game sees players take to the skies in wingsuits and parasailing, then speeding down mountains with snowboards and skies. The emphasis was on player moments and capturing stunts for your friends to see. It seems to be a hyper real, very serious SSX Tricky. I’m not too sure which demographic this will appeal to and no one was really screaming out for this game, but regardless, it does look gorgeous and I can’t wait to test those ragdoll physics.

We’ve just got Sony left now, here’s hoping for something more exciting then more open worlds that I don’t have time for.
