E3 2016: Ghost Recon Hits the El Chapo Button in Wildlands Gameplay Reveal

Wildlands E3

Drugs are bad, OK!? That’s probably the best summary I can give for our reintroduction to Ghost Recon: Wildlands.

Ubisoft certainly know how to pick an opening act. After treating us to a CGI trailer that seemed to be trying far too hard to exemplify some sort of dramatic irony by juxtaposing drug cartel imagery with religious iconography, the lead designer of the upcoming title stepped out and explained to everyone why cocaine is bad. He followed that up by explaining the core concept of the game – the entirety of Bolivia being turned into a ‘narco state’.

Cur the first gameplay reveal we’ve seen since the game was announced last year. It seems to be following the same, co-op centric ethos the series has been following since Advanced Warfighter. Amidst some very awkward fake gamer chat, we were treated to a by-the-numbers stronghold mission involving a group of heavily armed Americans shooting their way through half a Bolivian town using stealthy things like dune buggies and drones. It all seemed fairly by-the-numbers, with some clear influence taken from Metal Gear Solid V. Time will tell, but I don’t see this as the title to revitalise the ailing franchise. It drops on March 17th 2017.
