E3 2016: Ubisoft Reveal Steep, A New Open-World Sports IP

Steep game

The finale of the Ubisoft conference this year was surprisingly, a brand new product.

That game is Steep, an extreme sports game set in the Alps.

The game has clearly been created with the passion you would expect from a developer setting a game in their homeland. The environments are epic in scale, encompassing the vast majority of the Alps mountain range. The visuals are stunning; clouds, snow and trees are lush with realism, and players can navigate that imposing landscape together via ski, snowboard, paraglider and wing-suit.

The word ‘together’ is a deliberate inclusion; Steep is to be an open world community game, where players can share screenshots and videos, engage in competitive matchups with one another, and set each other personally tailored challenges based upon routes the player has taken.

Speaking critically, it does smack a little of “Look at this pretty game we have made”, and appears to be a glorified Wii Sports Resort, but the community aspect does have me intrigued, and the fact that competition is a secondary, optional concept within Steep is a novel prospect.

Will it be worth paying full retail price for? Will Steep be too stee–expensive ? You can find out for yourself soon enough, as the studio will be seeking beta testers in the near future.

Then we will have a better idea of whether this new IP is reaching new heights, or all downhill.
