If you and your friends have been waiting a long time to play Dead Island 2, the good news is that the wait is over. After countless delays over many years, you can finally team up with your friends and bop some zombies on the head to your heart’s content. But if you’re playing on PS4 or PS5, do you need PlayStation Plus to take the action online?

The answer is yes, you and each of your friends will need to have a PlayStation Plus subscription to play Dead Island 2 online on PlayStation. The only multiplayer games that don’t require a subscription to play online on PlayStation are free-to-play games like Fortnite.

You don’t need any of the more expensive tiers of Plus in order to play Dead Island 2 online, just Essential at $9.99/£6.99 per month. With Essential, you can also get some discounts on the Store and download that month’s “free” games, though you will need to continue your subscription in order to keep playing those “free” games.

Up to three players at a time can join a session in Dead Island 2, but bear in mind that it’s a peer-to-peer connection. Make sure that the person with the best internet connection hosts and invites the other players to have the most consistent play experience. Bear in mind, however, that players on the base PS4, Xbox One, or Xbox One S cannot currently host sessions, though this will be fixed in a patch that’s scheduled to drop in early summer.

Dead Island 2 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X & S.
