Battlestar Galactica is a certified classic when it comes to sci-fi TV shows. Ronald D. Moore’s 2004 reimagined version took the 1978 series to a higher level and gave us a show with a darker tone, moral conflicts, and better storytelling than the original. Battlestar Galactica ran for over four seasons on the Sci-Fi Channel until it ended in 2009, but that begs the question if it will ever return for a fifth season.
While all good things end at some point, sometimes people will revisit them as they did with the Caprica and Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome prequels. With spin-offs like those being made, who’s to say a new season or reboot won’t happen? Here’s everything you need to know about Battlestar Galactica: Season 5.
When Is Battlestar Galactica: Season 5 Coming Out?
Unfortunately, Battlestar Galactica: Season 5 has no official release date because the series has reached a natural conclusion. However, while the 2004 version is finished, there’s a new Battlestar Galactica reboot series in the works by Peacock.
That’s right, it was announced in 2019 that Peacock was developing a reboot of the beloved sci-fi title, with Mr. Robot’s Sam Esmail as executive producer. It was also recently revealed that the creator of The Sinner, Derek Simonds, will be the showrunner for the upcoming series.
Nonetheless, it’s unclear when the new Battlestar Galactica reboot will come out. Due to last year’s Writers’ Guild strikes, production on the reboot was delayed and only resumed when the strikes ended. With the delays, it might take a few years before Peacock releases their take on Battlestar Galactica.
What Is Battlestar Galactica: Season 5 About?
Since the 2004 Battlestar Galactica is finished, there’ll be no more plot for a fifth season. The show ended on its own terms, even though the finale was met with somewhat mixed reviews. While that version has concluded, the new Battlestar Galactica reboot will be set in the same universe.
The news came when Moore told Variety that Sam Esmail called and said he wanted to do something in the same universe without restarting or recasting the show. It was also announced that the series will be connected with an upcoming Battlestar Galactica movie made by Universal. None of their plots have been revealed, so we’ll have to wait for more updates to know more.
Battlestar Galactica: Season 5 Confirmed Cast
If Battlestar Galactica: Season 5 were to happen, or the reboot decides to go with the original cast, then you can expect the following actors to reprise their roles:
- Edward James Olmos as Admiral William Adama
- Jamie Bamber as Captain Lee ‘Apollo’ Adama
- James Callis as Dr. Gaius Baltar
- Tricia Helfer as Number Six
- Grace Park as Number Eight
- Katee Sackhoff as Captain Kara ‘Starbuck’ Thrace
- Michael Hogan as Colonel Saul Tigh
- Aaron Douglas as Chief Galen Tyrol
- Tahmoh Penikett as Captain Karl ‘Helo’ Agathon
On the off-chance the original cast does return, it’s unclear if Mary McDonnell will return as President Laura Roslin, considering her character’s fate by the series finale.
Where To Watch Battlestar Galactica in the US
Even though a fifth season may never happen, US viewers can watch Battlestar Galactica on Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, and Microsoft Store. You can also expect the upcoming Battlestar Galactica reboot series to come out on Peacock.
Where To Watch Battlestar Galactica in the UK
Like the US, Battlestar Galactica: Season 5 will never become available in the UK since the show has ended. Still, UK viewers can watch Battlestar Galactica: Seasons 1-4 on Amazon Prime Video, Sky Store, Microsoft Store, and Apple TV. However, it’s unclear where people from the UK can watch the new Battlestar Galactica reboot because it has been announced that Peacock will be shutting down in their region.
How Many Episodes Will Battlestar Galactica: Season 5 Have?
To be blunt, Battlestar Galactica: Season 5 will have no episodes since the fourth season was the last. On the other hand, the episode count for the Battlestar Galactica reboot hasn’t been revealed yet. All we know is that, according to a Hollywood Reporter podcast, the series will not be a ten-hour movie and will instead go for episodes that have multi-part stories. Each episode will also not be capped at 42 minutes and will have minimal fillers.
Battlestar Galactica: Season 5 Trailer
As of writing, Battlestar Galactica: Season 5 or the reboot doesn’t have a trailer. Due to the strikes, the Battlestar Galactica reboot has only been recently resumed, which means it’s still likely in pre-production. The trailer will only come out once filming is completed, so we’ll update you when that happens.
