The Apocalypse Now Video Game Doesn’t Look Good At All

When it was announced that Apocalypse Now would be getting the video game treatment and was seeking crowdfunding, the buzz generated almost guaranteed it would hit its goal. That just hasn’t been the case – with little time remaining and plenty of pledges still needed, the campaign was taken to the official website instead.

One of the reasons why backers may have been deterred was that very little was known about the game, especially where gameplay is concerned. How could Francis Ford Coppola’s war classic realistically make the leap to the gaming world? It’s an unsettling, slowly-building movie about mental health in warfare, which is just not going to translate well.

Since its crowdfunding platform change, the developers have shared some work in progress (WIP) gameplay screenshots. It’s still early days for the project, but these don’t fill you with confidence for its release in 2020.

Murky as anything, these screenshots unveiled in a press release from American Zoetrope remind me only of Shellshock: ‘Nam 67. Perhaps it’s too early to judge the game’s quality as these may have only been released as answers to the questions of fans, though that may work out to be a detriment to the game’s reputation.

Or maybe it will be the next Ocarina of Time, who knows.

You can visit the official website for the Apocalypse Now game here and help towards the huge funding goal of $5,900,000. It’s raised $63,445 so far.
