A Plague Tale: Requiem – Mercy Achievement/Trophy Guide

I give you mercy.

A Plague Tale: Requiem

A Plague Tale: Requiem is the highly anticipated sequel to 2019’s very well received A Plague Tale: Innocence, and the follow-up is just as brilliant as the original outing. Of course, veteran players of A Plague Tale won’t be surprised to learn that there’s an abundance of puzzles to solve as you make your way through hostile soldiers and demonic plague rats, but there’s one puzzle that you might not even realise has a solution until it’s too late.

Here’s everything you need to know about how to unlock the Mercy achievement/trophy in A Plague Tale: Requiem.

The Mercy achievement/trophy is earned for sparing the life of the guard on the docks during Chapter 4, titled Protector’s Duty. If you missed the Mercy achievement/trophy the first time around, head to the fifth checkpoint, Obligatory Co-operation. Chapter 4 sees Amicia and Lucas making their way to the harbour to secure a path out of the city, only to find guards and rats standing in their way. About halfway through the chapter, you’ll unlock the ability to use tar, which can be used to create flammable surfaces to make your way through hordes of rats.

After learning how to use tar to your advantage, you’ll then find yourself on the docks, where a lone guard will make their presence known, trapped and surrounded on all sides by those pesky rats. Here, you’ll have to solve a puzzle regarding some tar barrels and crank wheels, which the guard will help with.

Once you’ve completed the puzzle, you’ll meet up with the guard at the end of the dock, and the uneasy alliance you’ve forged will be shattered as he realises both you and Lucas are fugitives after the previous events that have occurred. Your first instinct at this point will likely be to throw an Exstinguis at his torch, letting him be devoured by rats, but suppress those urges and instead use your sling to launch some tar at the torch he’s carrying.

As well as creating a flammable surface when thrown with a pot, tar also has the added benefit of amplifying any fire that it comes into contact with. When thrown at a lit torch, the flame is boosted to the point of temporarily blinding the guard holding the torch, which allows you to sneak past. You can then use that effect to walk past the guard, head up the stairs to the left behind him and go through the big metal door in order to trigger a checkpoint. You’ll then unlock the Mercy achievement/trophy.

A Plague Tale: Requiem is available right now on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X & S.
