There are plenty of mechanics in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom that are only somewhat half-explained, one of the, being the ability to toast food. What this essentially does is cook certain ingredients and increases their effects.
To toast food in Tears of the Kingdom, you must be near an open fire. The first one you will encounter can be found early on in Great Sky Island on your way to meet up again with Princess Zelda. Later, you will be able to make your own campfire with some wood and something to light it with.
First, you should find an ingredient. Apples are a good food to experiment with, as they’re very numerous early on.
Press + then press R until you get to materials. Press A on Apples, then select hold to basically equip them. You can hold 5 at a time.

With the materials in hand, back out and you will notice a new cursor. Simply press A near the fire and Link will throw the apples near the fire to start toasting them; they will emit white smoke. When toasted, they will emit black smoke.

Pick these apples up now and they will have become Baked Apples, which heal you for a quarter of a heart more than normal apples.

Be sure to experiment with other materials around the skies of Hyrule. The Skyshroom is another material that can be used for toasting that’s plenty abundant, for example. You can usually tell if a material is good for cooking/toasting by if it has a heart in the top right of its icon in your inventory.
