South Korean game studio MUMO Studios have released a new trailer announcing their sci-fi social deduction game and debut project, DUBIUM.
Per a press release: “DUBIUM is a 5-player social deduction game set in a near-future sci-fi universe. Players take on the role of Frontier or Traitor and must escape from an abandoned space station by any means necessary. Frontiers will cooperate to repair solar panels that power the escape pod while trying to uncover the identity of the sole Traitor. Players must not relax until they escape; the Traitor will sabotage the Frontiers’ efforts at every step as they try to complete their own mission. The Traitor needs to hide their identity and use deceit and treachery to take the Frontiers out one by one in order to escape the station unopposed. Everyone wants to get out alive. Trust no one.”
Beyond the now-familiar structure of players conducting menial tasks while trying to deduce which of them is a deceiver, DUBIUM looks to add some mechanical complexity. Players will be able to upgrade their characters’ abilities and equipment through play, which will presumably make it easier for them to complete tasks, and either deduce who’s the traitor or more effectively sabotage others without being caught.
DUBIUM will also allow communication between players via pre-recorded radio messages, meaning that teammates will have to choose their words carefully to get their meaning across without tipping off the traitor.
The game’s teaser trailer shows off a glimpse of the five crew members players can control, including a muscular Heavy, another character with some kind of scouting backpack equipment, and a female crew member who’s quick with firearms. Also, there’s an awful lot of blood, which other similar social deduction games have lacked.
The obvious comparison for any social deduction video game is Among Us, and while DUBIUM’s deep space setting further echoes the hit mobile game, its new mechanics and slick visual style does give DUBIUM a more textured atmosphere that will hopefully turn into a distinct play experience when it’s released.
DUBIUM is scheduled for release in Early Access on PC in 2022.
