Where & When Is The Fortnite Season 3 Event?

Will there even be one this season?

It’s quite an odd time to be a Fortnite fan. Fortnite: Chapter 2 – Season 3 is due to conclude on August 26th, yet we’ve seen little to no story build up like in almost any season before it. As for the season-ending event and where and when it will take place, it’s becoming more and more likely that there will be no event for Season 3.

To cast your minds back a bit, Season 2’s event saw The Device unleash havoc on the Fortnite map with rising oceans and the partial destruction of The Agency. At the start of Season 3, the water levels had decreased, though plenty of POIs were submerged. Over the course of Season 3, those POIs have gradually appeared out of the water again as the water level lowers.

But there doesn’t seem to be a storyline for Season 3 like there has been almost every other season, at least one that’s front and center for all to see. There’s been a mini-event already involving a spaceship near Craggy, but it really doesn’t appear as if Epic are pushing the narrative this season at all.

That might be down to what Season 4’s theme will reportedly be. According to Hypex, a prominent leaker who has insider info directly from Epic, Fortnite: Chapter 2 – Season 4 will have a superhero theme, specifically to do with Marvel.

While Fortnite’s crossovers are no doubt cool, they are getting to the point where the ads and branded content are a little too much. If a whole season revolves around an external IP, that might be a problem for a load of Fortnite fans. Chapter 2 started off with a whole lot of promise from a storytelling perspective, but there honestly hasn’t been much to latch on to.

As complicated as Fortnite’s storyline is, there are millions of players who want to get down to the mystery of the island. The Device saw Jonesy appear in the real world and suggest there’s some kind of simulation at play. If Season 4 really is a branded season, that will effectively make it two seasons without any narrative progression. What’s going on with The Seven? Why are all those hatches popping up again? What was Jonesy doing there?

This might all be by design, of course. Donald Mustard, Epic’s worldwide Creative Director, tweeted back in February that storytelling is all about slowing things right down and then picking it up again gradually.

That might be where we are at right now, a little downtime for the Fortnite storyline. With the lack of an event for Season 3 and there not being many narrative threads to chase up, Fortnite might just be taking a step back from all the hijinks for now. This could be down to the global situation, it might be the case that a crossover season makes financial sense to Epic with what’s going on in the world.

Let’s not forget, either, that Season 4 will not be available on iOS devices as things stand. Fortnite has famously been removed from the App Store due to them breaching the ToS in protest of Apple’s business practices. The pair are currently embroiled in a lawsuit.

I will, of course, update this if Epic announce a new event ahead of time, but we’re running out days until the launch of Season 4, which is due to launch on August 26th. What do you sports fans think of this?

Fortnite: Chapter 2 – Season 3 is free-to-play on PC via the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Android.
