The Hylian Shield holds a particular place in the Legend of Zelda series. This shield, a recurring piece of gear for Link, symbolizes bravery and tenacity, reflecting the essence of the games. Its prominence was heightened in Breath of the Wild, where it was the most robust shield in Hyrule. In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, it continues to hold its position as the top shield thanks to its 90 defense, despite Link not having it at the start of the game.

The quest for every player now is to rediscover the Hylian Shield, which resides in Hyrule Castle, specifically Hyrule Castle Docks (2). There are two paths to reach the shield, but we’ll concentrate on the simpler one: the water route. So, prepare your vessel and head for the docks.

Your journey begins at the Castle Town Prison (1) on the western island, where a dock with a raft awaits. Navigating the boat requires skill, either with the assistance of Zonai devices (like the Steering Stick) or a Korok Leaf. This is not just a simple trip – it’s a challenge for your navigational skills. Make your way from point 1 to point 2 on the map above.

But sailing isn’t all you need to prepare for. The Hylian Shield isn’t simply lying around, waiting to be picked up. It’s guarded by the Gloom Hands and another formidable foe to face once you kill them. Be ready with your best weapons to face these adversaries, such as bomb and Fuse weapons capable of doing AoE damage.

After reaching the docks and overcoming the enemies, the final obstacle to the Hylian Shield is a basic puzzle. You’ll encounter five lit braziers surrounding an unlit one. By igniting the central brazier, a chest is revealed. Inside, the legendary Hylian Shield awaits, with an impressive 90 Defense.

The water route is one of many ways to the Hylian Shield. For those who seek a more thrilling adventure, there’s a second, more challenging path.

This route takes you through the ruins of Hyrule Castle, descending from a hidden passage that once led to its library. A cobblestone path on the eastern side of the chasm exterior indicates the passage. Though more dangerous, this route provides an exciting alternative for those who crave an extra dose of danger in their quest for the Hylian Shield. Regardless of your chosen path, bravery and tenacity will lead you to your reward.

Players can also use their Paraglider, the Lookout Landing Skyview Tower, and Stamina Elixir to reach where the Hylian Shield resides, as seen in the video below. You’ll need to drink a Stamina Elixir roughly halfway through your journey.

While the Hylian Shield outlasts any other in the game, it’s not entirely unbreakable. Don’t worry; even if you break the shield, you can replace it after you complete a side quest for Cece in Hateno Village. The clothing seller will have a new Hylian Shield for you – but it’ll cost a pretty penny.

The quest for the Hylian Shield in Tears of the Kingdom is more than just a treasure hunt. It’s a journey that tests your bravery, ingenuity, and skill. From navigating Hyrule’s waters to battling formidable foes and solving puzzles, each step brings you closer to the legendary shield. With this guide, you’re prepared to embark on this adventure. May the Triforce guide you on your journey.
