If you’ve ever been wandering around in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom for longer than about five minutes, you’ve probably come across a pack of enemies at an encampment, only for that encampment to suddenly stand up and hurling rocks at you. This is a Battle Talus, one of the trickier mini-bosses in the game, but not one that’s impossible to defeat.

The first step to defeating this hulking piece of rock with platforms is get rid of the Bokoblins that guard it, the easiest method being with a bow and arrows, ideal equipped with something explosive like a Bomb Flower. As soon as you clear all of Bokoblins, the Battle Talus will get aggroed and start attacking you.

The Battle Talus only has a couple of moves you should be aware of, but the main one is its rock throw, which can insta-kill you if you’ve not yet upgraded your hearts. Keep running to the left or right while keeping your distance when you notice them readying a throw and you should be able to remain unhurt.

To stun the Battle Talus, shoot the large black gem that seem to be powering them with your bow. They will then kneel for roughly 10 or so seconds, giving you plenty of time to climb atop.

As for how to actually get atop the Battle Talus, we recommend that you either use a Fan Zonai Device to help you ascend quickly, or lure them to one of the platforms that can usually be found near them so you can easily jump across. You can even set fire to grass and use the updraft to carry you upwards.

Once on board, simply equip your best melee weapon and get to hacking at that large gem. After a time, the Battle Talus will throw you off, but this does very little damage. Just repeat the process until its health is drained and claim all of the many rare gemstones that it drops as a reward, which can fetch quite the high price when sold to vendors.

You can in fact just keep hitting that black gem with your bow in order to defeat Battle Talus without ever having to “board” it, but where is the fun in that?
