It’s that made up time of year again when a lot of us decide to loosen our wallets and purposes for a “bargain”. More often than not, Black Friday deals are really just a bit terrible with minimal discounts extended long past the day itself. Studies even show that businesses are cynically raising prices just before the event and then lowering them again to make the deals look better, which is just a bit shit, really.
Xbox One’s Black Friday event actually has some great deals, however. From the 18th until the 25th, gamers can pick up some heavily discounted heavy hitters, but also baulk at paying £39 for Mafia 3, which doesn’t seem like that generous a discount at all. There’s a lot of fluff getting in the way of the good stuff, so we decided to filter through it all to find you the best value for money.
Assassin’s Creed Syndicate – £12.99
The AC that convinced a few that the series still had legs in it is at a fair price. No sign of Unity; can’t imagine why.
Batman: The Telltale Series – Episode 1 – Free
Most Telltale games have a free first episode, but Batman didn’t. The sale fixes that. It’s worth checking out, but it has to be said that the engine is showing its age terribly.
Dishonored: Definitive Edition – £7.50
Its sequel may not be doing too well where sales are concerned, but the original at this price is an easy sell.
Dragon Age Inquisition: Game of the Year Edition – £10
The mind boggles over how this game has been sold at such a low price for so long. One of the best games of 2014 is worth a look if you haven’t yet.
Far Cry Primal – £12
The most Marmite entry in the Far Cry series so far, Primal is a cinch at £12, especially when you consider it isn’t even a year old yet.
Grow Up – £4
Only released in August, Ubisoft’s Grow Up is absurdly cheap for anyone looking for a platformer with heart.
Hitman: The Complete First Season – £22.50
One of the best and most polarising games of the year finished its first episodic run and is now available at a heavy discount.
Life is Strange: Season 1 – £5.28
Another episodic game, Square Enix’s Life is Strange showed Telltale that they aren’t the only ones who can force QTEs and narratives to make beautiful babies.
Metro Redux Bundle – £4.80
Have these games ever been sold at full price? Slightly dated but still great fun for those who enjoy post-apocalyptic FPS action based on Russian novels.
Rare Replay – £6.60
Possessing as much nostalgia as it does sadness over what could have been, Rare Reply is a reminder of what the once great developer was capable of. Countless hours of playtime await.
Overcooked – £10.98
A tasty mix of couch co-op and buffoonery, Overcooked is one of our best games of 2016 for good reason.
Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty – £4.95
A remake of the PS1 classic that retains most of the charm and reminded gamers everywhere that we need to go back to Oddworld.
Song of the Deep – £6
The creators of Sunset Overdrive took the more scenic route with this Metroidvania slice of loveliness. Easily worth checking out.
The Telltale Games Collection – £17.50
All of the best that Telltale has to offer in a neat package. This was them at their peak and offers plenty to interest gamers of all tastes. Bring tissues.
This War of Mine: The Little Ones – £7.20
A surefire contender for our best games of 2016 countdown if it hadn’t already been released on PC, this game is heartbreaking and captivating in equal measure.
The Witcher 3: Game of the Year Edition – £17.50
Go and buy the best game of this generation. Don’t even argue with me.
