Next Goal Wins

An inspirational sports comedy almost feels like a throwback at this point, yet that’s exactly what writer/director/producer/actor Taika Waititi is going for with the upcoming Next Goal Wins. This biographical sports-comedy film from the director of Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit tells the story of the infamously terrible American Samoan national football team attempting to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Their hopes are pinned on a desperate Dutch American football coach named Thomas Rongen, who must either take the spiraling team to the top or lose his job.

If this film and its potentially heartwarming story sounds good to you, the movie will be hitting theaters on November 17th, 2023 in the US and December 29th, 2023 in the UK. You may decide to just wait and rent the movie, or perhaps even hold off until it’s on a streaming service somewhere. Our best guess is that you’ll be able to stream the movie on Hulu by January 2024 at the earliest.

Where to Rent Next Goal Wins Online

Next Goal Wins will stay in theaters for three or four weeks. This means the movie could appear as a digital rental or purchase on places like Amazon and Google Play in some markets as early as December 2023.

However, it seems safe to assume Searchlight owners Disney will wait until the movie has completely finished its global theatrical run before putting it on streaming and VOD. You will be able to rent or buy the movie around the same time it’s made available on a streamer. This means Next Goal Wins will be available to buy or rent around January of next year. However, you could be waiting until as long as February or March.

Where to Stream Next Goal Wins Online

As we mentioned before, Next Goal Wins is probably going to end up on Hulu next year between January at the earliest and March at the very latest. This has been the path for Searchlight releases, with both the production/distribution company and the streaming service being run by Disney. Recent Searchlight films like The Menu and Theater Camp appeared on Hulu approximately 2-3 months after opening in theaters, and there’s no reason to believe Next Goal Wins won’t stay on the same trajectory. The only alternative we can imagine is that Disney will decide this heartwarming, dramatic sports story will be a better fit for a family using Disney+, but that’s pure speculation.

About Next Goal Wins

Next Goal Wins is the first non-Marvel directing job by Taika Waititi since 2019’s success Jojo Rabbit. Waititi has proven himself capable of helming a crowd pleaser that doesn’t involve superheroes, and this project certainly seems to be very personal to him. The buzz around the film hasn’t been spectacular, and early reviews have been a little mixed, but those who know what they’re getting here are more likely than not going to have a great time. The success of Next Goal Wins may perhaps influence the future of Waititi’s attachment to a live-action Akira.
