Top 10 Scariest Moments In Cinema (NSFW)

Event Horizon
Event Horizon recovered video from ship

I remember watching this thinking, ‘oh a cool sc-fi, looking forward to awesome space shots’. But no. This is one of the most terrifying films I’ve ever seen. The idea that hell is in a dimension, passable through a black hole, which can transform a ship into pure evil, is just…wow.

When the rescue ship discovers a video made by the past crew, they watch this amalgamation of blood fuelled orgies, a man throwing up an arm, someone holding their eyes in their hands and mumbling in Latin. The experience is harrowing.

Man behind diner in Mulholland Drive

Okay, so this may be a weird one for some, but I can’t watch this scene without whimpering and shedding a tear. It’s not the actual man behind the diner. It’s not about him, or what he looks like. It’s the way he’s described. It’s the feelings he’s created in our sad friend. It is then, his reaction to seeing him.

I mean, it’s Lynch, so he knows what he’s doing here. The timing is beautiful, the music helps me shit myself, and the actor pulls at my heart. What is this man that he can create such feelings? What is wrong with him? What can he do?

Dragged from bed and footsteps in Paranormal Activity

I guess we were all expecting this. It was a film that some people thought was silly, some people enjoyed, and most people hated the ending.I suffered from this film because, as I mentioned earlier, I am most vulnerable to demons/ghosts when I’m sleeping, so when we have an invisible demon, pulling people off their beds and shadows/footsteps appearing around their room, I will not sleep.

And I didn’t. For so long. Yet I can’t stop watching it. I’m slowly killing myself.

Sutherland screams and points in Invasion of the Body Snatchers

I love this film, and everything about it. It’s a great commentary on human relations, society expectations and inherit fears on our existence. Yet it does this with the silliest idea. Aliens are taking over! It’s silly, because aliens have been parodied in so many ways, that we no longer find them scary, we can get them on our lunchboxes and keyrings. They have become a product, and if we can buy it, we’re not afraid of it.

Yet, by stripping emotion, and getting us where we are most paranoid, when your friend is shrieking and pointing at you because you are yet a human vessel to be taken over, we feel our most vulnerable.

This has been harrowing, and thank you for sticking it out with me. As a present, I’ve added a gif of Brooke Adams doing that crazy weird eye thing.
