Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun: Season 2 – Everything You Should Know

The anime's apparently "restarting".

While it seemed as if Dorohedoro and Darwin’s Game would take the top spots for most watched anime of winter 2020, unexpectedly, Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun actually snatched that position from underneath. The supernatural comedy anime about the boisterous spirit Hanako-san and his partner in crime, Nene, turned out to be a pleasant surprise in more ways than one, but even though the anime was a huge success, its future remains uncertain.

Although the first season was released back in 2020, years later today, there still isn’t any confirmation on a Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun: Season 2. There’s no official reason as to why we haven’t heard anything so far, but knowing how well the anime did, a second season seems to be only a matter of when.

When Is Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun: Season 2 Coming Out?

No announcement disclosing the release date for Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun: Season 2 has happened yet, so we can’t say for sure when the anime will return. Intriguingly, while a second season hasn’t been confirmed, there is a new anime project in the works.

The Twitter account from the anime stated that the Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun anime is being “restarted“. It’s still unclear what restarted means in this context, but the teaser visual that accompanied this reveal showed pieces of recycled animation from the 2020 adaptation. The 2020 adaptation was known to have switched a lot of things from the source material, and although it was good, it seems that the production may be making a special series that remains faithful to the manga.

What Is Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun: Season 2 About? (Spoiler Alert)

If we’re being specific about where Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun: Season 2 will begin, then it’ll start from chapter 36 since that’s where the anime ended. Although, there’s a really high chance that Studio Lerche may again skip entire arcs and re-order other story moments as it did with the first season.

But if we’re strictly talking about the plot, then it’ll pick up right after the gang returns from the Hell of Mirrors. Nene goes to the Tanabata festival, but in a strange turn of events, she somehow ends up 50 years into the past. Interestingly, she meets Hanako-kun when he was alive who continues to act as if it’s a normal day in school. Flustered, Nene starts digging about what’s what and why she is there.

Which Studio Is Making Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun: Season 2?

It’s a bit too early to speculate which studio could possibly direct Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun: Season 2, but since we don’t have a reason to suspect a change in production, Studio Lerche (Classroom of the Elite) should again be bringing the manga panels to life. Hanako-kun’s artwork was very extraordinary in comparison to other anime, so getting to witness that same style again would be no less than a treat for fans.

Reportedly over 8 million copies of the series are in circulation. On one hand, the anime had a terrific run and ended up boosting the franchise’s popularity, but on the other, it might’ve become so successful that the production may want to milk the most out of manga sales. If that ends up being the case, they may not be eager to make a sequel just yet.

Where Will Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun: Season 2 Be Aired?

You should expect to see Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun: Season 2 air on Crunchyroll, Funimation, and Hulu upon release. Crunchyroll holds the official license, but because the first season is available on Hulu too, the next one should follow suit.

Unfortunately, the chances for the second season to arrive on other streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney+ seem slim. It’s not something predetermined, but Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun isn’t as big of a series as other shōnen hits like Chainsaw Man, and Bleach that platforms like Netflix would definitely be hell-bent on bringing to home ground. Still, if the opposite happens, it wouldn’t be shocking either, so let’s just hope for the best.
