THQ Nordic’s Parent Company Purchases Insurgency & Metro Devs

THQ Nordic almost trying to be the Disney of video games.

Metro Exodus review 2

The parent company of THQ Nordic and Deep Silver, Embracer Group, have decided to open up their wallets once again and purchase a variety of new and established gaming companies, including New World Interactive and 4A Games, who are responsible for Insurgency: Sandstorm and the Metro series respectively.

Overall, Embracer Group purchased seven game development studios through its various subsidiaries, with Saber Interactive taking the reins for both New World Interactive and 4A Games. Also involved in the spending spree was Pow Wow Entertainment, Palindrome Interactive, Rare Earth Games, Vermila Studios, and Deca Games.

For New World Interactive, Embracer purchased 100% shares in the company for an undisclosed price, but Embracer hope to recoup the cost over the next three years with New World’s upcoming projects. These include the console port of Insurgency, set for release in the first half of 2021, and an “unannounced owned IP”, which suggests that New World are working on an already established franchise.

As for 4A Games, the terms of the deal are much more public. Embracer Group purchased the company for $36 million in cash and newly issued B shares, with a clause of future earn-out payments up to $35 million pending the completion of certain milestones. 4A themselves have a lot of irons in the fire at the moment. As well as continuing to “build on the Metro franchise”, according to the press release, they will also be working on a AAA multiplayer experience in collaboration with Saber Interactive, along with a brand new AAA IP that “leverages its decade of experience on developing the Metro series”. Unless Metro is another project entirely, it sounds like we could be getting a multiplayer Metro game, but that’s speculation.

As for the other companies purchased in the deal, they’re working on a variety of different projects. Deca Games will be using their free-to-play mobile games experience to create new titles that utilise Embracer Group’s IP on mobile devices. Vermilia Studios is a Spanish game development company working on Crisol: Theater of Idols, a first person horror game set in the village of Tormentosa, “a Hispanian village with an ancient past” according to the press release. Vermilia are hoping to use the extra funds to develop the Crisol universe further in the future.

Rare Earth Games are an Austrian outfit that are currently working on an online co-op survival game that set for release on PC, consoles and cloud-based services, while Palindrome Interactive are set to release their first game, Immortal Realms: Vampire Wars, on PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch on August 28th. It’s currently in Xbox Game Preview if you want to check it out. Lastly, Pow Wow Entertainment are working on two games, one of which is an existing, THQ Nordic-owned IP, while the other is a multiplayer roguelike platformer set in a constantly changing world.

THQ Nordic, and by extension, Embracer Group, already own plenty of game studios, so the fact they have room in the budget for more is surprising. Either way, these should be excellent additions to their expanding portfolio. Any of these projects sound interesting to you? Sound off in the comments.
