File this one under “things we never saw coming”, Team Ninja have announced that Dead or Alive 6 is happening, and will be arriving next year. To celebrate this fantastic news, they’ve unveiled a debut trailer, showing off that trademark fast combo action that the series in known for.

The trailer shows us plenty of familiar characters, including Ryu Hayabusa, Zack, Jann Lee, Hayate, Kasumi and Helena. Hayate in particular has been given a big redesign, complete with an edgelord style hood, and if the trailer is anything to go by, him and Hayabusa are rivals.

From what we can see in the trailer, Dead or Alive 6 is building upon the cinematic fighting action pioneered in DoA 5, including stage interactions, pulling the camera closer for big hits and super moves and so on. It’s also interesting to note that, for a series famed for its use of women in sexy costumes, there are only two female characters and their outfits are uncharacteristically reserved.

When speaking to IGN about the game, director and producer Yohei Shimbori said: “We wanted to make a more cool and mature Dead or Alive this time, and to that end we made a conscious decision to make the characters less sexualized.” It seems like DoA 6 will be a new direction for the series, one that a lot of people will find more positive.

Nah, they’re still going to have DLC bikini packs. You fucking watch.
