Suicide Squad off to a Strong Start at the Global Box Office

Suicide Squad

Despite dark predictions that it was going to flop, Suicide Squad has opened to a strong $267,105,000 worldwide. This means that it’s already recuperated its $175,000,000 production budget, (thanks, Box Office Mojo) but marketing costs probably amounted to well over $100 million million, so it still has quite a way to go before it officially becomes a financial success. But man, it’s off to a strong start.

The underperformance of Batman vs. Superman did not bode well for future DC Expanded Universe Films, and when you combine this with hastily completed re-shoots, poor reviews and word of mouth (not to mention crybaby fans trying to shut down Rotten Tomatoes), and a cast mostly no-name characters who only hardcore fans will recognize, things were not looking good for Suicide Squad. Throw in the facts that aside from Will Smith (whose star has waned as of late) most of the actors in the film are not bankable stars, and that it was denied a release in China, and it looked like we had a recipe for disaster on our hands.

A disaster that was thankfully averted however. Warner Brothers clearly chose to release Suicide Squad in August to replicate the success that Disney had with Guardians of the Galaxy, and it clearly paid off. DC’s villainous ensemble took $135 million from the US alone, which is higher that Guardians’ $94 million opening, so it’s already ahead in that respect.

Some outlets are reporting that it needs to gross as much as $750 million to break even, and if this is indeed true, then it will be a bit of a stretch for it to reach this goal, but we can be certain that Suicide Squad will perform exceptionally on home video when Warner release release the inevitable extended cut.
