One of the big appeals about Starfield is the fact that you’re the captain of your own spaceship, able to explore the various solar systems that the game has to offer. Of course, with a lot of materials, weapons, armour and other kinds of important loot to find out there in the vast expanse of space, you’ll need to make sure that your ship’s cargo hold is big enough to accomodate the sheer amount of stuff you’ll find on your travels. With that in mind, we’ve got a few tips to increase the size of your ship’s cargo space in Starfield.

Starfield Increasing Ship Cargo Space Explained

There are two main ways to increase the cargo space of your ship in Starfield, one of which requires a few skill points while the other one involves Credits, remodelling your ship and more. Firstly, levelling up your Payloads skill in the Tech Skill Tree can increase your overall cargo hold space by up to 50%, if you obtain all four levels. There’s no negative penalty for this skill, so if you just want a flat upgrade to your space, this is the way to go, but bear in mind that Payloads is a Tier 2 skill, meaning you’ll need to dump some points into Tier 1 Tech skills before you can upgrade your cargo holds.

The other method is a bit trickier, but can lead to a massive increase in your cargo space if you play your cards right. At any settlement’s spaceport, talk to the ship technician and select the option to modify your ships. After that, select the ship builder mode, and here’s where the fun begins. In this mode, you can add different nodes, habitation modules and other functional parts to your ship, including new cargo holds. Sticking a few cargo holds onto the sides of your ship can drastically increase your overall storage space in a short time.

This method does have its drawbacks though, as the more cargo holds you stick onto your ship, the heavier the ship will be, meaning it’ll be more sluggish during flight and combat, and won’t be able to grav jump as far. These can be offset by spending additional skill points on skills like Engine Systems, Starship Design and Astrodynamics, but that can be quite time-consuming. Essentially, if you’re going to add cargo holds to your ship, show some restraint early on.

Starfield is available now on PC and Xbox Series X & S.
