Starfield: Tips For Increasing Your Inventory Space

Bethesda likes to populate their game worlds with an endless amount of items, all glaring at you, begging to be picked up. A lot of these items are usually worthless junk, but something inside you wants them. The same can be said for Starfield’s sprawling universe, which has more items than you could ever carry.

If you see the words overencumbered quite a lot, then chances are you battle Starfield’s cruel storage limitations, forcing you to breathlessly make your way to every nearby vendor just so you can run light as a feather again.

Fortunately, there are a number of things you can do right from the start to make your space exploration just a bit easier. Here’s every tip you need to help prevent the dreaded overencumbered status.

Weight Lifting Skill

Weightlifting

This is arguably the most beneficial skill to rank up early on, as it will increase your maximum carry weight to 100 once it’s fully ranked up. You can find this skill under the Physical tree in the first tier.

Companions

These sidekicks do more than just carry an extra gun. You can get into relationships with them, have fun conversations, and, best of all, use them as an extra inventory to hoard everything you’re not using. Well, not everything, as they have a carry limit, but it’s no doubt handy to have.

If you have the Adoring Fan following you around, then he will come equipped with the Weight Lifting skill, meaning his capacity to carry more space junk is greater than the other followers. However, you have to put up with his incessant worship of you. The longer you can tolerate him, the bigger the carry-weight capacity will be. Good luck.

Cargo Hold

If your inventory is full and your companions can’t carry anymore, then there is another alternative that you can do in the moment. The cargo hold of your ship can carry some of that burden and lighten the load on your person.

The most remarkable part is that the cargo hold capacity can be increased or decreased depending on your ship’s customisations. If you want to bring everything with you into space, then it’s worth investing to increase its capacity and become the biggest space hoarder the universe has ever seen.

You can access the cargo hold by heading to the cockpit of your ship. There should be a terminal near the pilot’s seat that will access the cargo hold. You can pause the game, navigate to the ship menu at the bottom left, and press F on PC or X on Xbox to interact with the cargo hold.

When you’re exploring the surfaces of planets and moons, you can place items and resources into your cargo hold at any time. Keep in mind that you can’t use this feature inside interiors.

Outposts

You should try out the outpost feature if you haven’t already because this base-building tool provides plenty of ways to unload your items. You’ll be able to build your base on various planets and moons to set up a home away from home. With it, you can craft storage containers to hold various kinds of resources.

Furthermore, if you set up a cargo link between outposts, you’ll have a shared inventory where all the resources can be combined into one big storage depot.

Constellation Chest

This is a pretty neat trick for those who have a hard time parting with these items. Following the main quest to The Lodge will reward you with a room to call your own. You can find it up the stairs and down the corridor. Make a left turn, and the room in the middle is yours.

There is a safe that has unlimited storage space, which is great for storing anything and everything you don’t wish to fully part with. Even if it’s something you want to use later on but it’s weighing you down, just place it in and pick it up later.

There’s even a storage box in the basement near the door that does the same thing. Great for stowing resources to use on all the crafting benches in the room.

Don’t Pick Everything Up

This is probably the most difficult tip to accept, especially if you’ve played Fallout or The Elder Scrolls series, but Starfield works best when you don’t hold onto everything all the time. Unlike Fallout 4, junk is just junk and doesn’t sell for very much, so you can easily avoid this.

Use your aid items frequently to keep your carry weight under control, and craft or sell things often, as even the crafting components can sometimes weigh loads.

Inventory space is a difficult thing to manage and something you’ll be battling throughout your journey across the stars. Hopefully, now you’ll be better equipped to take on just what you need and nothing more.
