Google has today announced that anyone who signs up for Stadia Pro will receive two months for free. The deal also applies to those currently subscribed.

Stadia Pro will be available for free in 14 countries with the offer rolling out completely over the next 48 hours. Once the two month period is up, you can pay to stay subscribed or opt out any time.

The news was relayed via press release by Phil Harrison, VP and GM of Stadia, who said the following:

We’re facing some of the most challenging times in recent memory. Keeping social distance is vital, but staying home for long periods can be difficult and feel isolating. Video games can be a valuable way to socialize with friends and family when you’re stuck at home, so we’re giving gamers in 14 countries free access to Stadia for two months. This is starting today and rolling out over the next 48 hours.”

Acknowledging that game streaming might not be the best use of bandwidth at this time, Harrison also mentioned that they are looking into dropping the default screen resolution from 4K down to 1080p.

With increased demand due to more people at home during this time, we’re taking a responsible approach to internet traffic. For Stadia, we’ve always adjusted bandwidth use based on a variety of in-home and local internet factors. To reduce load on the internet further, we’re working toward a temporary feature that changes the default screen resolution from 4k to 1080p. The vast majority of people on a desktop or laptop won’t notice a significant drop in gameplay quality, but you can choose your data usage options in the Stadia app.”

Google recently found themselves in a spot of bother after misleadingly claiming that games would stream in “true 4K”. Last month’s DOOM Eternal up-samples to 2160p from 1800p rather than the promised true 4K.

Stadia Pro gives you access to a collection of streamable games each month. The likes of GRID, Destiny 2: The Collection, and Thumper are all currently included; players can also purchase other games outright, though they aren’t exactly cheap.

All you need to do is visit the official Stadia site to sign up, download the Stadia app, and then configure it to work on your laptop or supported Android phones; you will need the Chromecast if you want to play Stadia on your TV.

As a Stadia adopter, I would be hard pressed to say it’s been a worthwhile investment, but you really can’t go wrong with it for the price of nothing.
