Single of the Week: Wiley – ‘Chasing the Art’

Oi! Oi! You what!? You what!?

New SINGLE OF THE WEEK, that’s what. And what?

The continuing of the stream of consistent singles dropping like rain from the grime scene’s cloud, that’s what. I’ve previously BANGED ON about the PREVALENCE of grime coming through this year, and not just making its presence known with another strong year of output but potentially setting this year out as the year that grime made it.

Which sounds ludicrous, obviously, because grime already made it with an army of artists on the frontlines fighting and pushing it forward. Beyond that, it’s had plenty of culprits crossing the borders into the mainstream, including our man Wiley here, so what am I on about the year that grime made it?

Well, as I mentioned previously, there has been a steady snowballing when it comes to grime, but a steady snowballing parallel to the one getting it coverage and cementing its place in British musical history, one that’s been rolling a little slower than the other but is ultimately gonna end up bigger in the long run – the one courting America.

Slowly but surely America has been coming around to grime, with the number of cross referencing and cross pollinating rising, co-signing, featuring, and more; no more has this been more portrayed more obviously than Kanye’s BRIT Awards Grime showcase. However, that’s all well and good, but what’s really gonna make this happen is the absolute brilliance blowing up from grime’s key artists and more at the minute, including some recent SINGLE OF THE WEEKS, though most importantly our current SINGLE OF THE WEEK creator, and grime godfather, Wiley.

‘Chasing the Art’ is unquestionably good, featuring great production from Heavytrackerz, and robust rhymes from Wiley as he confirms his place in the musical landscape, self-affirming where he is and where he’s at, as well as roundly schooling any newcomers about where they are, where they ain’t and what they need to do to even consider themselves close to getting on par.

“I said you ain’t gonna get anywhere with all that hate in your heart. Don’t wanna take too much on the grime legacy so I’m taking apart. What you gonna do musically now it’s not all about making your mark? Well, I’m back where I wanna be, it’s not about money, I’m chasing the art.”
