Valere is one of two Solstice Warriors in Sea of Stars tasked with confronting the evils of the Fleshmancer. As a follower of the path of the moon goddess, Valere is capable of wielding lunar magic. Throughout her and her allies’ journey, Valere will encounter plenty of combat opportunities that play to her strengths and challenge her vulnerabilities.

This guide will take you through Valere’s combat style in Sea of Stars, including her basic attacks, her skills, and the combos she can perform with other party members. This guide will contain spoilers regarding party members you meet later on in the game though, so be warned.

Valere’s Basic Attacks

As a battle monk, Valere brandishes her moonstaff with powerful balance. Her basic attacks deal blunt-type damage. As a Solstice Warrior, she draws Live Mana from basic attacks dealt to enemies that can be siphoned by party members to boost their attack power. You can stack up to three charges of Live Mana into an attack but make sure to use them before combat ends as they don’t carry between battles.

How to Use Valere’s Skills

Skills are magic actions that are performed by drawing from your pool of MP. This resource can be drawn by performing basic attacks on enemies or eating certain enriched food items. It also replenishes when your party rests. To start with, Valere has a capacity of 10 MP but this will steadily increase as she levels up.

The Crescent Arc skill costs 6 MP and is a mix of lunar-type and blunt-type damage delivered in a wide swing. The strength of the attack is most intensified at its source and gradually lessens as the arc continues. While this is a magic action, it scales based on the strength of her physical attack stat.

Setting you back 7 MP, the Moonerang is one of the most versatile and worthwhile of your party’s skills to ultilise in most encounters. It produces a lunar projectile that can be deflected between enemies indefinitely. The speed at which the Moonerang is volleyed back to Valere increases with each hit, so the only limit to the effectiveness of this attack is your own reflexes. As an added bonus, if you manage to bounce it over 25 times, you’ll unlock an achievement.

Overall, Valere is largely a damage-focused party member who is especially strong when it comes to striking multiple opponents simultaneously. Her skills are best used for crowd control and during boss fights where the boss’s form is split into individual parts.

How to Use Valere’s Combos

Combo points are gradually built up as party members take turns, break enemy locks, or successfully time hits.

Once you’ve accumulated one Combo Point, Valere and Zale can perform a shared attack called Solstice Strike. Not only does Solstice Strike deal blunt and sword damage as standard but it can also be enhanced with Live Mana to add lunar and solar effects. Additionally, it generates 3 MP for both Zale and Valere.

Valere’s only early-game healing ability is a combo she shares with Zale called Mending Light. For one combo point, it restores a moderate amount of HP to all party members.

Valere’s Progression

During your adventure, Valere will gain new skills including a defensive spell called Lunar Shield (9 MP) and an Ultimate attack that is charged up over the course of combat. She’ll also unlock the ability to do a solar-infused Moonerang attack with Zale called Soonrang (2 CP) and a powerful blunt attack with Garl called Bash Drop (2 CP).

As your party grows, Valere will learn Moon Shiv (3 CP): the sword/poison/lunar combo attack that can be done with Sera, the portal assassin. Once you finally meet the kindly alchemist, Resh’an, he and Valere can clear out hordes of enemies with Arcane Moons (1 CP). B’st is a character that joins your party toward the end of the game. His Moonrock combo (2 CP, blunt/lunar/arcane) is a strong addition to your battle repertoire.

In terms of leveling, it’s best to invest Valere’s bonus stats into Physical Attack and MP. She is primarily attack-led to the slight detriment of her defensive abilities. However, it’s worth leaning into this niche and working to build a party around her with a strong emphasis on support.
