Rust: How Does Crawling Work?

After it’s become more and more common in multiplayer games in recent times, Rust will now let you crawl after you have been downed/incapacitated as part of the July 2021 update.

You will be able to crawl away from danger sometimes when downed by another player and animals, but you will be incapacitated in the classic way should you be downed by fall damage.

In a crawl state, players will be able to open doors and, obviously, move around, but nothing else. While crawling, you will also revert to the old way of incapacitation of simply being stuck on your back if you enter really deep water or a player starts to loot you.

You will also have a greater chance of standing up on your own while crawling compared to just being on your back. There’s a 20% (1 in 5) chance of standing up while crawling around, and a 10% (1 in 10) chance while on your back.

However, this will now also depend on your food and water levels before being downed — the more you’ve eaten and drunk, the higher this percentage will rise up to a 25% increase on those chances. This means that if you’re at full levels for hunger and thirst and are crawling, you have a 45% chance in total to stand up.

The crawling update also makes good use of the Large Medkit item, which isn’t something that a lot of players will run with all that often. Should you not be lucky enough with your percentages, the Large Medkit will automatically get you up while crawling, but only if it’s in your belt (the quickslots at the bottom of the screen). Worth bearing in mind that you won’t get the health from the medkit, just the revive. Large Medkits are crafted with 2 Medical Syringes and 50 Low Grade Fuel

It will be interesting to see if more players take this item more during raids/PVP encounters as a result of this update, which will also introduce the new Voice Props DLC for maximum annoyingness.

Rust is available now on PC. Rust: Console Edition is a different experience that’s also available for PS4 and Xbox One.
