Prey Reboot: What the Reviews Are Saying

It’s been a strange old road for the new Prey. Plenty of people are mad that it isn’t a carbon copy of the Prey 2 we once thought we would get, the demo has enthused as many gamers as it has divided them, and there was some questionable business with the developers behind a Shadow of the Colossus inspired indie game.

But just under a year since it was announced, Prey is now out in the wild. Thanks to Bethesda’s strict stance on not sending our early review copies, however, we don’t really have much of an inkling of what it’s like. We’re going for a retail copy here at Cultured Vultures, but there have been a couple of publications who received their copy a day early, or lucked out through something like Amazon shipping before they should.

More are to be added and we will update this as soon as we get them, but here’s what the Prey reviews are saying so far.

Prey 2017 Gloo Cannon

Reviewer: Rishi Alwani

“Clocking in at around 20 hours, Prey is well worth checking out even if you’re not a fan of horror or sci-fi. It might not be wholly original, but that doesn’t make it any less fun.”

“As far as first person action games go, Arkane Studios is probably the best in the business. Proving that the studio has no shortage of interesting ideas, Prey is the perfect blend of thrilling action and thought provoking story. Who needs a new Bioshock or Half Life game when we’re getting experiences like these?”

ACG Prey Review

Reviewer: Jeremy Penter

*“Prey feels like a return to System Shock with some Deus Ex thrown in…[compared to Dishonored]Prey is far more about the cerebral gameplay.

“By the end of the game, I felt like it had to be one of the best examples of plot threads flowing, unbroken but not disguised for a game in years.”

Reviewer: Martin Woger

*”So do not expect a shooter, but a game that invites and rewards you in a fantastic way, Which is at the same time a good way old-fashioned and yet in today’s gaming landscape a little futuristic. The question is: How will Prey deal with these qualities in the present?”

“While BioShock was heralded as the spiritual successor to System Shock, Prey feels like a much more successful attempt. An absolute joy to play and experience.”
