Magikarp, the fish personification of “you tried”, is one of the weakest Pokémon in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, barely capable of even attacking enemies. However, even the ugly duckling can be beautiful one day, or in Magikarp’s case, a Gyarados.

Magikarp can most commonly be found by using a Old Rod near a body of water. They’re extremely easy to catch; just one Poké Ball should be enough to add them to your Pokédex.

While Magikarp can learn a move or two, including Tackle, your best bet is to evolve them into Gyarados, a powerful Water and Flying Pokémon. To do so, you need to level up Magikarp to level 20.

It’s very easy to level up Magikarp in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, as any Pokémon in your party will get a share of the EXP even if they don’t take part in a battle. Simply keep Magikarp in your party and eventually they will level up enough to evolve into Gyarados.

Bear in mind, though, that Gyarados can also be found out in the wild late in the game, so all the levelling up may not actually be worth it.
