If you’re hoping for a new RPG to spend dozens of hours playing on your Nintendo Switch, today’s launch of Paper Mario: The Origami King should be right up your alley. Developed by Intelligent Systems, The Origami King hopes to capture the same magic and charm of previous Paper Mario games, such as The Thousand-Year Door, which Nintendo should really port to the Switch. We’re waiting.
The Origami King switches the formula of previous Paper Mario games, introducing a brand new ring-based combat system, where the player has to line enemies up to deal massive damage. The boss fights twist the formula the opposite way, with the boss occupying the center of the ring while you try to guide Mario to the center. The bosses are also stationary supplies, so expect a climactic battle against some Tape, of all things.
Here’s the official synopsis from the game’s Nintendo page:
It’s tear-able! The devious King Olly has transformed Princess Peach into origami, uprooted her castle and sealed it shut with magical paper streamers. Never fear, as our moustachioed hero Mario and his new friend Olivia are here to save the day!
Journey across the land – from scorching deserts to sailing the high seas – and recruit a revolving cast of wacky travel buddies, as you seek to sever these sinister streamers and save your paper pals from being turned into one of the Folded Soldiers!
With the game out today, we’ll be able to find out for ourselves whether or not this Paper Mario is worth printing, or if it needs recycling.
