Blizzard have announced that they will be shaking up Overwatch’s matchmaking in a big way over the coming months, as they will be introducing a new role queue matchmaking system that will allow you to pick your role before the game even starts.

Before the start of any Quick Play or Competitive Game, players will choose to matchmake as either a tank, support or DPS class, before being put into a game with two of each class, the so-called “2-2-2” composition that many Overwatch players have been asking for for the longest time. After each match, you’ll be sent back to the main menu where you can queue up again as the same class or another class entirely.

Naturally, splitting up matchmaking into three separate queues has the potential to increase matchmaking times, though you’ll be able to see estimates of how long it’ll take to find a game per class. Plus, Blizzard have stated that players who queue for roles that are in high demand might see some reward. No word yet on what that reward might be, but we’d guess it’d either be a loot box or a boost to your endorsement rating.

Adding specific role matchmaking also means that player’s matchmaking rating (MMR) will be calculated on a per-role, which should lead to fairer games. As for Competitive Play and skill rating (SR), each role will have its own SR, which you can earn by completing five placement matches in that role. This means that players could find themselves in Grandmaster as a Tank, but only Gold as a Support, giving a much clearer indication into a player’s strengths and weaknesses.

Role queue is currently available on the PC’s public test region, though Blizzard will be holding a beta period for the system that’ll go from August 13th to September 1st, before becoming fully available on September 1st. Role queue will also be utilised in Stage 4 of the Overwatch League, so you can see how it affects pro gameplay from July 25th. For more details, check out Blizzard’s blog post right here.
