The Optimized For Xbox Series X Badge Is The New “Featuring Dante”

Next-gen cases are looking mighty ugly.

Xbox Series X

Last week, we threw a bit of shade at PlayStation as they revealed what next-gen game cases will look like. Personally, we didn’t like them that much, but it wouldn’t be fair if we didn’t also point out that the Xbox One/Series X cases going forward are quite bad too. The design was revealed as the box-art for Dirt 5 was showcased, which you can check out below.

The tweet shows the Xbox case side-by-side with the PS4 case, and the Xbox case suffers so much more from visual clutter when compared to the PS4 version. Never mind the huge “Optimized For The Xbox Series X” badge, which has no reason to be THAT big in the first place, the cover conveys too much information at once, such as how it supports 4K HDR with Smart Delivery. It’s just not as clean as the PS4 version.

But let’s take about that badge, shall we? It’s such a huge mark on the box art that’s somehow bigger than both the age rating and the Codemasters logo, like that information is more important that who should be playing said game, or who made it? Not only that, but it just feels so out of place in regards to the rest of the box art, making it resemble the “Featuring Dante From The Devil May Cry Series” sticker that famously adorned the cover of Shin Megami Tensei: Lucifer’s Call. You can see it below, for reference.

At the very least, that cover is just one game, but Xbox seem to be running the risk of creating a similar situation with a majority of their games that support being optimised by the Xbox Series X. It’s garish, and the additional information plastered on the front of the box is just a couple steps away from becoming like that godawful Batman: Arkham City Game of the Year box art. Why? Why was this a thing?

Xbox placing a garish badge on the front of their covers isn’t exactly the be all and end all of next-gen. Of course not. However, it’s hard to argue that it’s an ugly first impression for most gamers. What do you reckon? Are you turned off by the big green badge? Sound off in the comments.
