October 2017 Free PlayStation Plus Games Available Today

Metal Gear Solid V Quiet

Sony’s on a roll lately with their PlayStation Plus line-ups and today brings arguably the strongest selection since the PS4 launched with the sandy adventures of Slitherboy and a whole bunch of lamp-holding being the two marquee titles.

First up, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is (hopefully) the last proper game in a series that has spanned all PlayStation consoles to date. Its predecessors in the Metal Gear series may have one its fair share of fans, but when Metal Gear Solid landed on PS1, it changed the landscape of gaming. The Phantom Pain may have the best gameplay in the series, but it certainly lacks in the story department – that didn’t stop us from loving it, though.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Next up, Amnesia: Collection is a, well, collection of all of the classic Amnesia games. Amnesia has done more than any other modern horror series to influence and inspire this generation, which is either for better or worse, depending on what you think of “pacifist” horror games. It shows its age quite a bit on PS4, but Amnesia: The Collection certainly has a few effective spooks up its sleeve, particularly that bit with the water. I haven’t been able to bathe since.

If you’re one of nine people who is yet to download That’s You, you better act fast: the PlayLink party game turns into a paid game from October 24th. While it’s a little slack on content, it’s definitely one of the better options you have to avoid awkward conversation with the in-laws.

Here’s the lineup in full:

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain – PS4
Amnesia: Collection – PS4
That’s You! – PS4
Monster Jam Battlegrounds – PS3
Hustle Kings – PS3
Hue – PS Vita, PS4
Sky Force Anniversary – PS Vita, PS4 & PS3

For PS4 players, that’s five “free” games for October, which isn’t a bad deal at all. Considering the controversial price changes to PS Plus, it’s a pretty wise move from Sony to go for value with strong line-ups for the foreseeable future.

October 2017’s free PlayStation Plus games are available today and will “unlock” at different times of day depending on your region. They typically land before noon, but the UK store doesn’t seem to have updated yet – keep an eye out over the next few hours for them.
