When it comes to gaming, sci-fi is undoubtedly one of the biggest genres there is — next to fantasy and nitty-gritty realism (with not so realistic healing). Some of the greatest games of all time are in the genre: Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect 2, Metal Gear Solid 2. It’s about time we had a look at what new sci-fi games will be coming our way in 2019.
The Biggest Sci-Games of 2019
1. Genesis Alpha One | January 29th, 2019
Developer: Radiation Blue
Publisher: Team 17 Digital Ltd.
Platform(s): PC, PS4, XB1
If you’re looking for a brutally paced game where you build your ship and slaughter bunches of aliens, this might be just the game for you. It’s a roguelike with perma-death, so every design decision you make on our ship counts, every crew member you decide to save or not counts. It looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun, especially for sci-fi fans who have been looking for something like Faster Than Light but on a more epic scale.
2. Crackdown 3 | February 15th, 2019
Developer: Sumo Digital
Publisher: Microsoft Studios
Platform(s): PC, XB1
The sci-fi action-adventure sequel filled to the brim with destructive capabilities is making a lot of promises to its fanbase. It’s one of the only new exclusives the Xbox One has left at this point, so if the game doesn’t fulfil the hype, it won’t be looking good for the console. No pressure. The game’s premise does seem fairly tough to mess up, though, and there’s no doubt a game starring everyone’s favourite Terry Crews and the ability to destroy basically everything will at least be fun.
3. Metro Exodus | February 15th, 2019
Developer: 4A Games
Publisher: Deep Silver
Platform(s): PC, PS4, XB1
The long-awaited third game in the Metro franchise looks to be bigger than ever. It takes place two years after Metro: Last Light as you slip back into the role of Artyom as you flee the Moscow Metro and travel across post-apocalyptic Russia. Combining stealth and combat with exploration and survival horror in non-linear levels, Metro: Exodus will be exactly what the doctor ordered — if your doctor advises you to play post-apocalyptic stealth shooters, as all good doctors do. Even the fact that it releases on the same day as Far Cry New Dawn, Crackdown 3 and the next entry on the list shouldn’t be a problem.
4. Anthem | February 15th, 2019
Developer: BioWare
Publisher: EA
Platform(s): PC, PS4, XB1
In the plot twist of the fiscal year, the developers famous for some of the best sci-fi single-player RPGs of all time are working on a multiplayer sci-fi shooter. From what we know so far, it seems like you will be able to play alone, but the experience will apparently suffer from it. Still, it’s an expansive open-world game that is sure to at least have wonderful worlds to discover along with interesting gameplay, even if it looks like the overall story is not going to be the main focus like with usual BioWare games. Fingers crossed.
5. The Division 2 | March 15th, 2019
Developer: Ubisoft
Publisher: Ubisoft
Platform(s): PC, PS4, XB1
Although The Division was supposed to be a long-lasting multiplayer sci-fi shooter, Ubisoft did the same thing that happened to Destiny and are releasing a sequel after several DLCs. Although some people quite enjoyed the first game, there were also quite a lot of people who criticized it, so it seems like this is Ubisoft’s attempt to right their wrongs. People have and will continue to call it a cash grab, but one can only hope it’ll be everything people wanted from the original — and more.
6. Rage 2 | May 14, 2019
Developer: id Software, Avalanche
Publisher: Bethesda
Platform(s): PC, PS4, XB1
If we’re honest, the first Rage game wasn’t that good. A cameo in Breaking Bad wasn’t going to fix that, especially not since he played it with the wrong kind of controller. However, Rage 2 looks to have taken all the drab overseriousness out of the first game and replaced it with full on insanity, which might have been a good choice. The first trailer had so much life and joy in such a desolate situation that might be a breath of fresh air. You never know, maybe Bethesda can have a post-apocalyptic game for the current generation that is actually good. Wouldn’t that be nice.
7. Star Wars: Jedi: Fallen Order | Holiday 2019

Developer: Respawn
Publisher: EA
Platform(s): PC, PS4, XB1
This will be the first non-Battlefront Star Wars game coming out of the EA partnership, and the one a lot of people are seeing as the possible replacement of Star Wars 1313. Although we know the game has you playing as a surviving padawan and takes place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, we don’t know much more than that. Most likely, we’ll hear more about the game on International Star Wars Day (May 4th).
8. Gears 5 | TBC 2019
Developer: The Coalition
Publisher: Microsoft Studios
Platform(s): PC, XB1
We don’t know all too much about Gears 5 yet, except that it’s probably coming out sometime this year and won’t be called Gears of War anymore. Also, there’s a new protagonist, Kait, who will be travelling through what the developers have claimed to be the “biggest Gears world” so far. Don’t worry, you’ll still see JD Fenix, Delmont Walker and Marcus Fenix, but the developers felt it was the natural decision to make after Gears of War 4 to have you playing as Kait.
9. System Shock | TBC 2019-2020
Developer: Nightdive Studios
Publisher: Nightdive Studios
Platform(s): PC, PS4, XB1
The long-awaited remake of the classic sci-fi RPG is on its way, either in late 2019 or early 2020. It’s been a while since the Kickstarter finished quite successfully, but the developers are still powering on with the game, even working together with the original developers to help continue their vision of the game. A demo released just a few months ago for Steam, GOG and the Humble Store, so if you want a taste of the action before they have more to show, you know where to go.
10. Halo Infinite | TBC
Developer: 343 Industries
Publisher: Microsoft Studios
Platform(s): PC, XB1
Just like with the previous entry, we know almost nothing about Halo Infinite. We know Master Chief is involved, and we know the game will almost definitely be the first game since Halo 3 to have you wandering around on a Halo. Other than that, we can’t tell anything from the announcement trailer we have so far, even if you can always make countless theories based on a few minutes of teaser footage. Still, many fans feel that Halo 5 set a fairly low bar for what to expect next, meaning it’ll take something grand to win their trust back.
11. Death Stranding | TBC
Developer: Kojima Productions
Publisher: SIE
Platform(s): PS4
Kojima isn’t a new face when it comes to the world of massive sci-fi games. He also isn’t a new face when it comes to stories that blow your mind. There’s a lot of pressure on Kojima to deliver with Death Stranding, but ever since the split with Konami, it seems like he’s been a lot freer. Although we’ve already had several teasers and interviews with actors who are in the game, it’s unlikely that anyone has grasped the true scale of the game or the core gameplay yet. However, if the MGS franchise is anything to go by, Death Stranding will go down in the annals of gaming history.
12. Metroid Prime 4 | TBC
Developer: Nintendo
Publisher: Nintendo
Platform(s): Switch
We know absolutely nothing about Metroid Prime 4. Even though we have a teaser even marked “First Look”, it tells us about as much as a single image would have. Hopefully, Nintendo will give us some more info at this year’s E3, but so far, the only way we could know less about the game was if it were under a different title.
13. Starfield | TBC
Developer: Bethesda
Publisher: Bethesda
Platform(s): TBC
Honestly, we don’t know if this game is coming out in 2019. It seems extraordinarily unlikely, judging by Bethesda’s normal development times, but at the same time, you can always hope. We’ll most likely have another massive singleplayer sci-fi RPG on our hands here — with Bethesda, you can’t really tell anymore. We’ll just have to twiddle our thumbs until we find out more about Starfield.
14. Cyberpunk 2077 | TBC
Developer: CD Projekt
Publisher: CD Projekt Red
Platform(s): PC, PS4, XB1
After The Witcher 3, CD Projekt Red’s newest project is Cyberpunk 2077. We’ve seen some gameplay — and we know the game is well underway — but as for when it’s releasing, we have a timespan anywhere between now and 2021. Still, a lot of people think the game will be releasing in 2019, so we can only hope that we’re lucky enough to play the game as soon as possible. The developers can take their time, though; the last thing we want is a rushed game.
