Announced during E3 2018, Starfield is a game shrouded in mystery. Many were already aware of it in some capacity before E3 thanks to trademark filings for its name with rumours abounding that it would debut at E3 2017, but that obviously never came to pass.
Bethesda’s Yoda, Todd Howard, took to the stage at E3 2018 to announce Starfield officially with the briefest of teases. Unless you’re working at Bethesda or an astronaut, you will likely know nothing about the game, but we can speculate. It’s clear that it will be a sci-fi single-player RPG but beyond that, it’s all guesswork.
We don’t have much to go off, but here’s what we know and think we may be getting with Bethesda’s Starfield.
What is Starfield’s release date? Who knows. Bethesda have owned the trademark for Starfield for five years and renewed it two years ago, which means that it’s been in the offing for a long time. Bethesda take their sweet, sweet time with their single-player games, so it’s really up in the air.
Where can I play Starfield? PC, without a doubt. Where it gets interesting, however, is with the next line of consoles. With a new Elder Scrolls also in development, it’s hard to imagine that Starfield will receive quite the same amount of attention. At a best guess, look for 2020 and beyond, which should also be around the same time when the new Xbox and PlayStation are making their mark as Howard stated that it will be a next-gen title.
What genre does Starfield belong to? This one’s far more straightforward. It will be a single-player sci-fi RPG that likely won’t stray lightyears away from the ES and Fallout formulas. Space exploration is almost a given, as well as a lot of glitches. Even if you gave Bethesda a hundred years to make a game, it would still be a hot mess.
Not really a synopsis as such, but here is the official word on Starfield from Bethesda:
“Discover Starfield, the new space epic currently in development by Bethesda Game Studios. Starfield is the first new franchise in twenty-five years from the acclaimed developers of The Elder Scrolls and Fallout series.”
Starfield Quick Facts
– Bethesda Game Studios will be developing the game. Doesn’t look like Obsidian will ever team back up again with Bethesda, which is a great sadness. – Bethesda have been working on it for at least five years. Probably the next five to fix its bugs as well. – According to Howard, it is currently in a “playable state”. – Starfield will launch with the next generation of consoles. – It is Bethesda’s first original property in 25 years, going back to The Elder Scrolls: Arena in 1994.
This was obviously a struggle. The teaser for Starfield shows an expanse, a planet, a space station/ship of some kind, and then what you have to presume is space warping before the title card comes along.
Starfield Teasers And Trailers
Are we excited for Starfield?
It’s hard not to be, but conservatively so. There’s nothing really concrete about Starfield for us to sink our teeth into, but a game like Fallout set in outer space? What’s not to like? As long as Bethesda embrace the RP in RPG, we should be in for a treat.
We also want to see Bethesda either dramatically upgrade their engine or start afresh. They’ve been dependent on the same one for far too long and all the constraints that come with it, so with a new generation of gaming afoot and all the power that will bring, they could hardly ask for a better time to make the switch.
