Biggest New Games of February 2019: Anthem, Metro, Crackdown & More

February 2019 promises post-apocalypses, Goku battering Naruto, and Terry Crews, as all things should.

Anthem

Just when you thought you could enjoy sunlight after returning to Raccoon City and getting Goofy, along come February 2019’s new games to push you back into the darkness. This is, without a doubt, the most stacked month of the year for new releases and is bound to feature at least one game to tickle the pickle of even the pickiest of gamers. If you don’t like post-apocalypses, how about Terry Crews?

There’s a lot of variety here with the 15th being the busiest day by far following everyone panicking when they saw how previously busy the 22nd of the month was going to be — Days Gone was also meant to come out on that day but has since been pushed back to April. If you’re done with January’s new games or just want to add even more games to your library that you will never have time to play, here’s what’s in-store.

1. Trials Rising | February 12th

Developer: RedLynx
Publisher:Ubisoft
Platform(s): PC, PS4, XB1, Switch

The first Trials game on Switch might have a tough task of standing out this February, especially with Ubisoft’s monetisation plans not exactly going down a treat. Saying that, RedLynx have been listening to the fans annoyed by the direction they took in Fusion, so we may see a mini-renaissance of sorts for one of the most YouTuber-friendly games out there. Could be flipping good fun. Sorry.

2. Jump Force | February 15th

Jump Force

Developer: Spike Chunsoft
Publisher: Bandai Namco
Platform(s): PC, PS4, XB1

Anyone not that familiar with anime may look on at Jump Force with some confusion, but anyone who lives and breathes the stuff will probably be salivating about the crossover potential. Shonen Jump games are certainly in their own little niche, which Jump Force wants to break out of as it looks to be the biggest game of its kind to date. It has Goku in it, and anything that features Goku has a good chance of selling well.

3. Far Cry New Dawn | February 15th

Far Cry: New Dawn

Developer: Ubisoft
Publisher: Ubisoft
Platform(s): PC, PS4, XB1

Much like Primal was to Far Cry 4, New Dawn is a “re-imagining” of the fifth game’s assets for a different experience that actually just spoils Far Cry 5’s story for anyone who’s yet to beat it. This time out, it’s the trendy post-apocalypse with a decidedly pink hue. Comparisons to Rage 2 are difficult not to make here, but New Dawn may offer something to Far Cry fans looking to make murder machines out of nuts and bolts. This one will be divisive, make no mistake about that.

4. Crackdown 3 | February 15th

Crackdown 3

Developer: Sumo Digital
Publisher:Microsoft Studios
Platform(s): PC, XB1

A game tied to the Xbox One almost as long as it’s been a thing is finally on its way this February. Crackdown 3 has been through the wringer since the project began and has been rejigged at least a couple of times, so the initial hype factor has worn off a little. However, considering it’s a Game Pass title, there’s no harm in joining the Crews crew if you’re already a subscriber and hunting down those sweet orbs.

5. Metro Exodus | February 15th

Metro Exodus

Developer: 4A Games
Publisher: Deep Silver
Platform(s): PC, PS4, XB1

Could Exodus finally bring Metro into the limelight that many believe the franchise deserves? 4A Games seem to be going all-out with the biggest and most beautiful Metro game to date with Epic making a huge play in getting the game exclusive to their store for PC, though your opinion on whether that’s a good or bad thing may vary. Far Cry New Dawn is its closest competition in terms of post-apocalyptic shooters out this month, so watch this space to see if it can come out on top.

6. Anthem | February 22nd

Developer: BioWare
Publisher: EA
Platform(s): PC, PS4, XB1

A grind shooter may not be to everyone’s tastes, but Anthem is a hail mary from BioWare, who’ve not exactly been at their best, and EA, who desperately need a win after their terrible public image and plummeting stocks. An open-world multiplayer RPG that might appeal to fans of Destiny and The Division 2, Anthem will certainly carve out an audience for itself, but the big challenge will be keeping players engaged for long enough while delivering a smooth experience, which it’s struggled to do pre-release with some network issues. Even if you have no interest in the game itself, that the developer and publisher have so much invested in its success will be a thoroughly fascinating thing to watch unfold. EA aren’t helping themselves with their weird release dates: Anthem is actually available from the 15th for those with Origin Access Premier.
