According to a report, Microsoft are bringing back the Fable franchise. Sources have told Eurogamer that the developers responsible for the Microsoft exclusive racing game series Forza Horizon, Playground, are working on a new entry to the beloved Fable series.

It’s almost already been two years since Lionhead Studios were shut down while working on Fable Legends, an online F2P entry to the series that barely reached its beta phase before the company was shuttered. Peter Molyneux said just half a year after the studio closed that he’d want to make a sequel to the Fable series with ex-Lionhead Studios developers, but nothing came of that.

When asked what they thought about the new entry in the series, ex-Lionhead developers said: “it is a little curious to get rid of the team that is uniquely expert in making Fable, and then try to make Fable.” Apparently, Microsoft’s interest in Fable was helped by the incredible success of Horizon: Zero Dawn for Sony. The new entry in the series is planned to be a story and character-focussed open-world action RPG.

No matter in which direction they plan to take the Fable franchise, there’s a lot of pressure on Playground’s shoulders. We’ll have to wait and see what they make of it.
