Some stories are timeless, with fables we grew up with as children acting as the basis to develop further tales. My Happy Marriage is one such story. Based on the Japanese light novel series of the same name, written by Akumi Agitogi and illustrated by Tsukiho Tsukioka, My Happy Marriage is a romantic fantasy story of an unlikely couple coming together in unhappy circumstances.
This anime isn’t the first adaptation of this property. Also known as Watashi no Shiawase na Kekkon, the story started off on the self-publishing website Shōsetsuka ni Narō. The series then got a manga adaptation, which was illustrated by Rito Kohsaka and serialised in Square Enix’s Gangan Online. It also got a live-action adaptation which was released in March 2023.
There are high hopes for its upcoming anime, as the manga adaption has received many awards, while the live-action adaptation was #1 at the Japanese box office during its opening weekend. With all that being said, here is everything we know about the upcoming anime release of My Happy Marriage.
When Is My Happy Marriage Being Released?
My Happy Marriage is due to be released on July 5th, 2023, as part of the summer 2023 anime releases. The anime will stream worldwide alongside its premiere in Japan.
What Is My Happy Marriage About?
My Happy Marriage is a very Cinderella-inspired story, set in a supernatural version of the Meiji era in the 19th century. After the death of her mother, Miyo Saimori (voiced by Reina Ueda) suffers abuse at the hands of her stepmother and stepsister. Her situation seems to get worse when it is revealed that she will be married to Kiyoka Kudo (voiced by Kaito Ishikawa), a soldier who is rumoured to be cruel. Previous engagements he has had have only lasted a couple of days. However, after their arranged marriage, the pair open up to each other, and their feelings start to grow.
Which Studio Is Making My Happy Marriage?
My Happy Marriage will be animated by Kinema Citrus, the same studio which created the well-regarded anime Made in Abyss and The Rising of the Shield Hero. The anime will be directed by Takehiro Kubota, who has worked as an episode director on animes like Ping Pong The Animation and ID: Invaded but whose only other work as a show director was Gloomy the Naughty Grizzly.
Where Will My Happy Marriage Be Aired?
My Happy Marriage is set to premiere on Tokyo MX and other networks, and will also be available to watch on Netflix. It’s unclear if Netflix will release the series weekly, or if all of the episodes will arrive all at once. You can watch the teaser trailer for the anime here and the official Netflix trailer here. At the time of writing this piece, the light novel and manga are still ongoing, so there is plenty of material to adapt for any potential future anime iterations. There are currently six volumes of the light novel which have been released, and four manga volumes.
