With the 2010s finally coming to a close this month, review aggregation website Metacritic published a list of the 50 highest-reviewed games of the decade, and you probably won’t be surprised to see Super Mario Galaxy 2 in first place with a score of 97%. The list is actually dominated by Nintendo titles, with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild coming in second place, Super Mario Odyssey at number 5, the 3DS version of Ocarina of Time at number 14, Skyward Sword at 24, Smash Ultimate at 27, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at 42, and a few others scattered throughout.
Aside from Nintendo, other games appearing high on the list included Red Dead Redemption 2 at number 3, Grand Theft Auto V at number 4, Skyrim at 7, and both the PS3 and PS4 versions of The Last of Us taking the eighth and ninth spots. And while the poor reception of Anthem may have sullied BioWare’s reputation, Mass Effect 2 still managed to appear at number 6 with a score of 96%.
Aside from the titles mentioned above, the rest of the list was pretty much as you’d expect, with The Witcher 3, Bloodborne, Uncharted 3, God of War, Portal 2 and Persona 5 all showing up. There were even a few indie titles included, like Undertale, Inside, and Celeste, proving that you don’t need AAA production values to make a great game. Finally, the list ended with two Square Enix titles, with Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers at number 49 and Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age coming in at number 50.
Needless to say, if you’re a gamer, you should probably make an effort to play all 50 games on the list. And if you don’t have the time, at least try to play the top 10.
