And now I practice my shocked face.

Spoilers for Marvel’s Avengers follow.

Available from today for those pre-ordered its more expensive editions, Marvel’s Avengers has actually been a nice surprise for me so far, so much so that I think they got it completely, utterly wrong with the beta. From what I’ve played, the single-player campaign should have been the focus, rather than its multiplayer Avengers Initiative component that might have been immediately offputting to those who just don’t vibe with live service games.

Featuring some great performances, witty banter, and unexpected variety, I’ve been having a good time punching dudes with my big fists, leaping over huge gaps, and playing A-Day for the third time. The story hasn’t really started firing yet, though it’s lucky that I’m not too invested in it — there’s a pretty big spoiler in its Marketplace.

The Marketplace is where you can go to pick up cosmetic items that rotate in and out over time, whether it’s emotes, skins, or any of that ancillary stuff people apparently like. Microtransactions are of course present in the form of Credits, and you can spend up to eighty quid on them in one go.

As predictable as that was, I didn’t expect to see the Marketplace so quickly prove many theories right: Captain America isn’t dead after all.

Marvel’s Avengers

The first time I wandered into the Marketplace, having somehow wound up there from the game’s wacky menus, I was presented with not one, but two Captain America emotes. This was barely five minutes after his supposed death during the events of A-Day, though the old adage of not actually seeing his body made it pretty obvious he wasn’t really dead.

That and the fact that, you know, it’s Captain America, one of the pillars of The Avengers and one of the most popular Marvel superheroes out there. While I’m here, there’s no way Batman is dead in Gotham Knights.

Sure, all of the wacky pre-order and platform exclusive cosmetics kind of gave the jig up ages ago about Cap’s fate, though it’s plain weird to see the game itself just saying “heck it” and putting a ghost in the Marketplace. I am practising my shocked face when he turns up as part of AIM having been brainwashed.

I am playing through Marvel’s Avengers and having a good time so far, a much better time than during its spotty and misdirected beta, that’s for sure. How about you?
