King's Bounty 2 review

Combat is one of the most important components of King’s Bounty 2 where players will engage in small-scale skirmishes against a wide range of foes. It can get quite challenging if players haven’t prepared their armies accordingly, so this guide should help players understand the most critical facets of the combat system.

Here are the three main elements of combat in King’s Bounty 2:

Unit Actions

And here’s everything you need to know about combat in King’s Bounty 2.

Unit Actions

Battles will primarily be fought and won by the player’s units.

In combat, units have five different types of actions they can utilize: moving, attacking, waiting, defending, and abilities.

The movement action allows units to move across tiles up to their speed limit. Moreover, units can move as long as they have movement points remaining.

The attack action has the unit make a melee or ranged attack at the designated target. Ranged units will need to take into account terrain that may block line-of-sight. Importantly, attacking doesn’t end a unit’s turn, so if it still has movement points remaining after an attack, it may be wise to reposition.

Units can also utilize the wait action, where their turn is placed at the end of the initiative queue. This may be useful for high initiative units to conserve their turn and let some other unit move first before reacting.

The defence action consumes all remaining unit movement points and gives it a bonus to damage resistance. This can be useful for slower units with lower damage potential to act as blockers.

All units also have one passive counterattack action. Whenever a unit is attacked in melee, they will attack back, causing damage to the offender. This passive counterattack action also defines a unit’s zone of control, meaning if any enemy unit moves through or away from an engaged unit, the unit exerting the zone of control will get a free attack on the shifting unit. Vitally, if the unit spends its counterattack action damaging a unit moving through their zone of control, they will no longer be able to counterattack until the next turn.

Magic

Heroes can also have a major impact in combat, mainly through the use of magic. Heroes can use spells to damage or debuff enemies or buff friendly troops.

Casting spells can be done through either the use of scrolls or innate casting. Scrolls can be bought or found as loot outside of combat and are consumed if used in battle. Casting from scrolls allows magically inept characters to use magic, but the effect of these spells will never be affected by hero upgrades and level ups.

Innate spellcasting works similarly to scrolls, except that the hero needs to cast a spell they learned by consuming a scroll outside of combat and spending the required mana cost. Mana is represented as crystals and these can be found from exploring and completing quests. Unlike scrolls, innate spellcasting will most definitely benefit from any skills and abilities heroes may have learned from levelling up.

Post-Battle Screen

Once players complete the skirmish, they will be greeted with a post-battle screen, which will indicate any rewards they may have received and any damage units took. Rewards will usually include vast sums of gold and some mana and occasionally some items.

In this post-battle screen, players can also heal damaged squads by spending gold. Fully eliminated squads cannot be healed at all and squads that have taken massive damage may not always be able to heal to their original numbers.

King’s Bounty 2’s combat system is where players can really let loose and come up with creative tactics utilizing their units and powerful spells. There is a large variety of encounters with both wide and narrow battlefields that will keep players on their toes.

King’s Bounty 2 is available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch.
