James Gunn Confirms Baby Groot Is Original Groot’s Son

Although there has been some confusion on the topic over the past year, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn has finally confirmed that Baby Groot is the son of the original Groot rather than a regrown version of the same character. So you might want to reach for your tissues, because this means the original Groot is indeed dead.

Gunn dropped this bombshell during a Twitter conversation with BuzzFeed writer Arielle Calderon, who asked if he would save Baby Groot over a Porg from Star Wars: The Last Jedi. After some humorous back and forth, Gunn finally tore off the band aid by saying the following:

When asked back in 2016 if Baby Groot was a new character or the same as the original, Gunn replied “It’s complicated”, before confirming that he does not have adult Groot’s memories. Two years later, fans are probably relieved (and heartbroken) that we finally have a definite answer.

On the upside, one of the main criticisms of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies is the lack of hero deaths, so the fact that we now know that adult Groot died at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy gives MCU haters one less reason to hate.

Anyway, Baby Groot (who was actually a teenager by the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) and the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy will soon be joining forces with the Avengers to take on Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, which opens on May 4, 2018.
