Halo Infinite’s Multiplayer has launched early thanks to Xbox Game Studios and 343 Industries, meaning potentially hundreds of thousands of players are committing some Spartan on Spartan violence as you’re reading this. Of course, now you’re probably thinking about how you can get involved too, so we’re here to let you know how the matchmaking in Halo Infinite works, and whether or not there’s cross-play.

Here’s everything you need to know about Halo Infinite’s cross-play.

Does Halo Infinite Have Cross-Play?

Like most Xbox Game Studios titles, including Forza Horizon 5 before it, Halo Infinite features full cross-play across Xbox and PC, with full cross-generation play between Xbox One and Xbox Series X | S, and even cross-progression tied to your Microsoft account, meaning you can start playing on one platform, then pick up your Battle Pass progression where you left off on another.

Can You Turn Off Cross-Play?

No, not really. Halo Infinite possesses no way in-game to turn off cross-play. Whether you like it or not, you’re playing with PC players even if you’re on console. There’s the age-old solution of going into your Xbox settings to turn off matching with other platforms, as detailed in our Forza guide, but according to reports from Reddit, it doesn’t even work anyway.

How Does Cross-Play Matchmaking Work?

As of the time of writing, Halo Infinite features three types of PvP matchmaking: Quick Play, Big Team Battle and Ranked Play. Quick Play and Big Team Battle have no customisable options, meaning you’ll have to match with people on other platforms regardless of their inputs (keyboard and mouse vs controller).

As for Ranked Play, you can select to queue via Open, or Solo/Duo. If you select Open, you’ll again have no choice in selecting which inputs you’ll be matched against, but selecting Solo/Duo gives you the option to only be matched against keyboard and mouse or controller players. Open and Solo/Duo for both methods have their own rankings, meaning there’s three different placements you can do to find out how skilled you are.

Admittedly, Halo Infinite’s multiplayer is still in beta, so a lot of details and features are going to be in a state of flux for a while. That being said, the subreddit is currently filled with complaints from people who want more options when it comes to the game’s cross-play options. Hopefully, 343 Industries will do something to address them soon.

Halo Infinite is available on PC, Xbox Series X | S, and Xbox One.
