Sometimes a new TV show comes along that’s so ridiculous we have to let you know right away. Time After Time is that show and you need to know about it this second.

Still in its early stages of development for ABC, the show follows Victorian era author H. G. Wells as he uses his secret time machine to travel to the modern age and stop Jack the Ripper. Did we mention Jack the Ripper is one of Wells’ friends? We expect the whole thing kicks off when Wells finds out about his pal’s murderous ways.

The guy helming the project is Kevin Williamson, noted for his previous shows The Following and Stalker. He’s big on cop procedurals, which suggests Time After Time will at least have a few trappings of the genre. Like a lot of procedurals hitting the small screen at the moment Time After Time will also be a TV adaptation of an existing movie. Check out the incredibly cheesy trailer:

The movie itself was based on a 70s novel by Karl Alexander. According to Deadline though the book and film will basically amount to a jumping off point for the series. Whether this means H. G. Wells will be travelling all over time or sticking to one era isn’t clear yet. What it probably means though is that Jack the Ripper won’t be the only villain of the show.

Really though, it’s more of a surprise that it took so long for another show like this to come along. The recent TV adaptation of Sleepy Hollow has become something of a surprise hit for Fox, with its historical-British-guy-winds-up-in-the-present-day storyline. All Time After Time would need to do is replace all the magical hocum of that show with Victorian steampunk time travel stuff. Simple really.
