Greta Gerwig’s Little Women Promises More Epic Than Little

I guess I know the movie Meryl Streep is going to get an Oscar nomination for this year.

Little Women

The official trailer for Greta Gerwig’s latest film Little Women has just been released into the world, allowing us to lose our collective minds at how good it all looks. The film is an adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s book of the same name, a book that was basically compulsory reading for a lot of us while growing up.

The film follows the four March sisters, each with their own ambitions and desires, having the kind of sisterly bonds we all wish we could have with our own siblings, even if Jo does burn off some of Meg’s hair – accidentally of course.

Gerwig could not have brought together a better cast, with the likes of Emma Watson, Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, Timothée Chalamet, Laura Dern and of course the incomparable Meryl Streep, who plays grumpy Aunt March. Chalamet and Ronan are reuniting on screen again after Ladybird, which was also a Gerwig film. The two will play Laurie Lawrence and Jo March respectively, best friends and hopeful lovers (this is mostly hope on my part, since I know how the story ends).

Little Women has been adapted for film and TV over the years, with the most recent one a TV series from PBS in 2018, starring Maya Hawke (of Stranger Things fame) and Emily Watson. The best of the lot is the 1994 version with Winona Ryder and Christian Bale as Jo and Laurie. We will have to wait till New Year’s Day to see if Gerwig’s version trumps it.
