Off course.

As gaming and technology have increased, the requirement for games to always be online has only intensified. Certain games require players to have a consistent online connection to access all of their features, and Gran Turismo 7 is no exception. Here’s everything you need to know about whether or not you can play Gran Turismo 7 online, and what features are available to you.

Truthfully, you can play Gran Turismo 7 offline, but you really, really shouldn’t. The game’s World Tour career mode features a lot of different modes and content, including World Circuit championships, Licence Tests, missions and even online races and online hang outs called Meeting Places. All of these are available if you’re connected to the internet, but if you’re not, you’re out of luck.

People who play Gran Turismo 7 offline will only be able to do single races, time trials, drift trials and Music Rally, a new arcade-style mode where players try to reach checkpoints before time runs, except the time is actually beats of the song you’re listening to. It’s a good mode, but considering you can’t save your progress in your World Tour mode at all when playing offline, which means no credits, no rewards and no career mode, it’s a miserable experience and a heck of a shortcoming for players who might not have access to the internet.

When speaking to Eurogamer back in 2021, series creator Kazunori Yamauchi elaborated on the reasons why the game is always online: “The requirement for the online connection isn’t specific to the Cafe per se – it’s just to prevent cheating overall from people trying to modify the save data, so that’s the reason for the online connection.”

The sentiment of preventing cheating makes sense, but it still feels like a bit of an unnecessary blow to players who might not have access to consistent high-speed internet. Considering that most of the game is blocked off if you’re offline, it’s hard to feel like the cost is worth the benefit.

Gran Turismo 7 is available on PS5 and PS4.
