God of War PS4 Release Date, Trailers and Latest News

God of War 4

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen Kratos, the most recklessly violent man in all of gaming. Last appearing (in the canonical chronology) in God of War 3 with a sword through pretty much his entire body, the series looked as dead as he did. But a cliffhanger kept fans hoping and praying for his return one day.

That return came at E3 2016 when Kratos, fully recovered from a few years spent on a tropical beach, turned up again in Norse times and eager to make his PS4 debut, son in tow. How he jumped from Greek mythology to Nordic remains to be seen, along with a whole heap of other questions.

Here’s everything we know so far.

What is God of War’s release date?
There is no officially confirmed release date for God of War, but thanks to voice actor Christopher Judge, we’re almost certain that it will be releasing in 2018.

His Twitter bio previously slated God of War for 2017, so it looks like it may have been delayed at some point.

Nobody else from the Santa Monica has confirmed the release date, but rest assured that it is not coming out this year, despite rumours.

Where can I play God of War?
Only on PS4. Kratos is the bloodiest mascot in the history of PlayStation gaming and has been a part of the family ever since the PS2 days. No doubt it will join a slowly growing list of the best PS4 exclusives.

What genre does God of War belong to?
Here’s where it gets interesting: the PS4 God of War does not look like the PS2 and PS3 God of War we all know and love. It seems to be dumping its hack and slash origins for an over-the-shoulder adventure which may have some RPG elements. That would be cool, but wait until we hear for sure.

God of War Synopsis

“The God of War has changed… and this is not the Kratos you know.

A difficult and unfamiliar road awaits as you explore a stunning retelling of a classic story. Join Kratos as he adventures through a deep and reflective journey of growth, violence and the desire to become a better man for the sake of his son. In a world of monsters, dragons and gods, the weight of responsibility rests heavy on your shoulders – and when your life is filled with blood and chaos, how can you prevent the mistakes of the past in order to protect your future?”

God of War Rumours

God of War 4

Compared to something like The Last of Us 2, God of War isn’t really the kind of game for wild speculation. Most of the rumours pertain to its release date, which many thought would be at the very end of 2017.

However, there is one very interesting tidbit to consider regarding Kratos’ son, Atreus. He may be the same Atreus who was the son of Pelops and the grandson of Zeus(!), who also ended up killing his brother before living a life of exile on Earth to become king of Mycenae in Greece. Wait and see.

– Kratos’ iconic blades are no more, replaced with axes instead. These may turn out to be significant, however.
– Kratos will be able to level up as always, but it will be based on XP instead. Maybe more RPG-esque elements to be revealed.
– Bear McCreary is working on God of War’s soundtrack.
– Christopher Judge will voice Kratos, taking over from TC Carson. The latter was not pleased to be ousted at all.

– Combat is now determined through the trigger buttons instead of the face buttons.
– Draugr will basically be the game’s grunts.
– Cory Barlog is back behind the wheel to direct God of War PS4, returning for the first time since Ghost of Sparta. He previously directed God of War II, which everybody loves.
– David Jaffe, who recently released Drawn to Death, is listed in the credits for writing and story.
– God of War PS4 may even come with multiplayer after a job posting was spotted for someone to work in that field.
– Spartan Rage will make a return.
– QTEs will also come back.
– There will be no Vikings. The game is set well before their time.
– It’s been developed especially for the PS4, not the Pro version. With most people still owning the standard console, that makes a lot of sense.

Are we excited for God of War on ps4?

God of War ps4

Um, does Kratos tear the heads off of mythical beasts and remorselessly murder pretty much ever Greek god? The answer is yes.

God of War, while by no means derivative, belongs to a genre that has had solid roots without doing much new for years. It seems like the natural progression to bring the action closer to the player and to focus more on the story. The setting is also fascinating; there should be no shortage of messed-up creatures for us to slay.

Consider our hype to be at No Man’s Sky reveal levels, but also at the same cautiously optimistic levels when Prey was announced.
