God of War Could Be Getting Five Sequels

God of War PS4

God of War’s PS4 debut has been one of the biggest games of the year so far, going on to receive rampant critical acclaim and seriously strong sales despite being exclusive to just one console. It should come as no surprise, then, that its creative director is already thinking of how to expand the franchise.

Speaking to Kotaku on their Splitscreen podcast, Cory Barlog explained that he already had the idea for five new God of War games down. That doesn’t necessarily mean that we will be getting five sequels, but as hinted by the events of the most recent game, there’s plenty more left to do in the Norse wilds for Kratos and Atreus.

Here’s an excerpt:

Jason: So how much of the future game plan do you have mapped out in your head?

Cory: Five games.

Jason: So that’s 25 years? Is that what you’re prepared for?

Cory: No. I want to figure out how to make these things faster, man.”

You can find Barlog’s full interview with Jason Schrier here, but beware of spoilers. It’s an hour-long discussion that really takes a deep dive into the latest God of War and its development; it’s definitely worth a listen if you have the time.

One of the most intriguing things to take away from this is that Barlog and Santa Monica already have the framework for the franchise in place, so it is unlikely that we will be waiting for another five years before the next game is released. However, at this point in the PS4’s life cycle, might it be more likely that we will see God of War on Sony’s next console, whatever that may be?

“It’s not the God of War you once knew, but Kratos’ debut on PS4 brings the franchise back into the limelight in a big way as one of the best games of its generation.”

You probably shouldn’t be surprised to hear that Kratos leaps onto our list of the best PS4 games.
