If you were wondering why, during Xbox’s E3 Briefing, the new Gears of War game was announced as just Gears 5, it turns out that’s a conscious move on behalf of The Coalition, and it has to do with simplifying the franchise’s brand. Studio Head Rod Fergusson took to Twitter to answer a question from IGN’s Ryan McCaffrey about the name change.
“Gears of War” is still the franchise name but now that we’re doing a family of products it made more sense to shorten the titles down – Gears Pop, Gears Tactics & Gears 5. Plus we always just call it Gears anyway so it feels good to simplify.

In fairness, changing the name from Gears of War Tactics to just Gears Tactics rolls off the tongue better, plus the word Gears has just become the shorthand term for the franchise anyway. That being said, it’s going to take a while for it to sink in. Expect the occasional “Gears of War 5” to slip into our copy every now and again.
