Gears 5 Reaches 3 Million Players During Opening Weekend

Scratch a lot of grubs.

Gears 5

Microsoft have said that the recently launched Gears 5 has already surpassed 3 million players during its opening weekend, making for the biggest launch week of any Xbox Games Studios title this current generation. It’s an impressive stat, though it’s one that’s clearly bolstered by Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, allowing subscribers to play Gears 5 on Xbox One and PC.

Gears 5 is also the most played Xbox Game Studios game at launch since Halo 4 in 2012, and the first week performance also includes the 4-days early access that was offered to Ultimate Edition pre-orders and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers, which is particularly impressive. More impressive is the fact that Gears 5 tripled the sales of Gears 4 on PC, making for the biggest Xbox Game Pass for PC launch ever, and the best Xbox Game Studios launch on Steam.

That said, it’s been reported that Gears 5 has only sold a quarter of Gears 4’s boxed sales during its launch week, which is both a testament to a change in gaming attitudes regarding digital/physical, along with the availability and affordability of Xbox Game Pass. Either way, 3 million players is still impressive. At least you know the servers are popular.
