Fortnite: What Is Sidegrading?

Side to the left, side to the right.

With Fortnite: Chapter 2 – Season 1 wrapping up, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Epic won’t be adding anything significant to the game. That’s not quite the case, the new “sidegrading” mechanic introduced with v11.40 as proof.

In the video below, you can see a player approaching an upgrade bench, which are already a part of the game. Typically, these will allow you you upgrade a weapon’s rarity, but with sidegrading, it appears that you can also upgrade to a weapon within the same “family” of weapons.

The player takes his SCAR and then uses 20 of each material to upgrade it into a Heavy Assault Rifle, aka the AK, of the same rarity. It’s a very interesting mechanic, though it will be interesting to see what other weapons could be sidegraded.

This is the only sidegrade you can currently do in Fortnite, and it only applies to casual matches. It’s a safe bet to assume that a pistol will be able to be sidegraded to a revolver, and possibly even a deagle at some point. If this is Epic’s way of bringing back vaulted weapons by making players seek them out, that could be a very interesting twist.

This could be an attempt from Epic to make upgrade benches more feasible, too. After being introduced at the start of Chapter 2, the cost to upgrade versus the reward has not been appealing to many players, so perhaps sidegrading will help that out. The update also makes the amount of mats required at benches less so.

We’re not far away now from Fortnite: Chapter 2 – Season 2, which is due to begin in early February. This season has been good overall, though the lack of updates throughout has led to some getting a little bored by the Fortnite experience. It will be fascinating to see if Epic return to the old content update churn or stick with what they’ve been doing over the last few months and kind of let the game speak for itself.

Fortnite: Battle Royale is free-to-play on PC via the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android.
