Always a good sign when you need an explainer article.

Seemingly every new season, Epic takes it upon themselves to change something major in Fortnite that didn’t need fixing. In Fortnite Season 7, that’s the Battle Pass system, which is a little bit more complicated than before for no reason at all. If you’re confused, here’s what the Battle Stars mean and what’s going on with Battle Pass tiers and levels in Fortnite Season 7.

What Are Battle Stars?

Battle Stars are a resource that are unlocked by levelling up your Battle Pass. You get 5x Battle Stars for every new level you reach. You still reach new levels by earning XP from completing matches and challenges.

They aren’t to be confused with the Battle Stars from back in Chapter 1, which used to level you up a tier automatically and were found out on the map.

How Do I Unlock New Items In My Battle Pass?

In Season 7, you don’t unlock items on every tier that you reach. Instead, you use the Battle Stars to unlock whatever you want on specific pages, which are usually sets for a specific skin. This means that you can unlock whatever you want in any order, as long as you have spent Battle Stars on previous pages or reached specific levels.

To unlock new pages and sets, you either need to spend your Battle Stars to claim new rewards or reach a specific level.

Before you are able to get new Battle Pass skins in Season 7, you must buy everything within a page or set before they are available to buy. This is basically the same as the old system, but whereas before you would just automatically unlock them, you now have to go through extra steps to redeem them.

It’s a very strange decision from Epic that’s ultimately just going to confuse players. It feels like they’re trying to gamify the Battle Pass system more than ever, which might put people off — the Battle Pass system of old worked so well for so long because it was simple and easy to understand with clear goals. Here? Not so much.

How Much is The Battle Pass?

As is always the case for each new season, the Battle Pass for Season 7 will set you back 950 V-Bucks. You can also unlock access to the Battle Pass by buying a Fortnite Crew subscription, which will also give you an exclusive cosmetic and 1000 V-Bucks each season.

Fortnite is free-to-play on PC via the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X | S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Android.
